I work as a newspaper photographer right now, and I'm lookin' to start a photography business eventually (on the side for now), and I've jus' gotten an opportunity to shoot my first wedding in a couple weeks. I don't have the funds to rent out a studio to start doin' portraits, plus I need a bigger portfolio... I know I could shoot weddings, parties, in-home portraits, etc.Does anybody have any ideas on other events/situations I could photograph that wouldn't require a studio or much equipment (backdrops, props, lighting, etc.)?? Thanks guys!

Family Picnics/Reunions, Sporting Events (they produce great action shots), maybe even some glamour shots...but done outdoors using natural lighting.

How about team photos for various athletic leagues? I'm talking about group shots and individual environmental portraits.

Pet shows (dog, horse, etc). Amateur sports events (cross country meets, rodeos, etc). Parents love to get pictures of their kids or pets. Many photographers may have already staked claim to these venues, but there is always room for new blood. Once completed, make contact prints (or Thumbnail proofs) and index them. Pass them around with an order form and charge for enlargements. You won't make a living at it, but you can get your foot in the door.

Having been both a journalistic photographer and then portrait photographer I can identify with your dilemma. The key to moving into a new photographic field is the personal connections you can make along the way from the ones you have already established. Call everyone you know that has some connection with photography and potential clients. Let them do some of the footwork for you and help with introductions. Second, make sure you join PPA, PMA ASMP as well as the local service organizations such as Rotary or Kiwanis. You will get great opportunities from there. Next, volunteer your service (pro-bono) for charity events, sports tournaments, etc. and take the opportunity to connect with the heads of those organizations. You don't need a studio, but you will need some basic portable lighting equipment and background. Success is more about your ability to promote than your skill as a photographer (which I assume is good). The ability to change your focus from camera to business is crucial to moving in the direction you want to go.
