Getting married this year and i wanted to get a professional wedding photographer - but finace was recommended a photographer from a university that takes photographs for documentaries and books. She has only done a couple of weddings. Did not get to see all her work, but i was not impressed. Would you go ahead with this lady, or go for a professional that is only involved in wedding photography.Fiance said that he does not like photographers that boss people around and tell them what to do.I think that you do need a professional to tell you how to pose and they know what looks good. She is not a student. She works at a university.

It depends on what your budget looks like. A professional photographer will run you thousands of dollars when all is said and done. A freelance/amateur photographer may be willing to do it for a couple hundred dollars. If you've got the money, go with the professional. If you don't, I'm sure the amateur photographer will work just as well for documenting the day. You're not likely to get big fancy portofolios with the amateur, but she's going to end up taking similar pictures. The only way I would 100% recommend going professional would be if you're having an outdoor wedding. Special equipment is needed to get the lighting right.

I would not go with any photographer if I was not crazy about their work - doesn't matter (to me) if they have done a lot of weddings or not. I just want to love their work... sounds like you don't, so if I were you, I'd keep looking.http://wedding-planning.suite101.com/article.cfm/choosing_a_wedding_photographer

Try look for a professional photographer that specializes in wedding that fits your budget... Theres nothing like having someone who actually knows what he/she is doing. I got a professional one, it wasnt any cheap, Im sure my husband didnt much like that we went for one of the non cheap ones but after seeing the result he was really happy. We both were! the pictures were amazing, they know what to photograph, how to make you stand... etc... Trust me is your wedding day, an important day in your life, you will want to have great pictures of that day. Cheers!

Professional.I mean, I have not seen her work so nor will I judge it.But your wedding only happens once.I personally would not take a chance.Cause' even if you were to re-act it for a professional after using her.It still wouldn't capture that same pazzaz.

a photography student can do a wonderful job at a much cheaper price. we did that, the student was a friend of mine and i had seen and loved his work, he had also done a few weddings already. we were all very pleased with the pics that we got. but......it you were not impressed with her work you would probably be disapointed in what you received. i would advise you find someone else, maybe a differnt student or go pro.

I wouldn't, I'd get a photographer who specialises in weddings. It'll make your pictures so much better.

If you don't feel comfortable with her, then don't hire her. You can't redo wedding shots. You can definately get a photographer that blends and won't be bossing people around during the wedding except during the formal posed shots. My photographer that I hired does a more editorial view and gets a lot of candid shots, rather than a lot of posed shots which is great. It looks like memories. You want a good balance of posed and candids.I would keep looking. You will know when you find the right person. You have no doubt, and you just click. I would call off the wedding before hiring someone that I did not like. 'Good luck.

I think you should let this photographer from the university do it. (Although it's still your descision) She's gunna need the practice... Maybe that was put bad but still... It'll help figure things out... For her... I guess... Idk...

Personally i would go with a professional that has some more wedding experience. Someone who knows how to photograph the change in your FH's face as he sees you for the first time and his anxiety melts away. Someone who knows what to focus on on the day. A lot of these special moments get missed by people who's main photographic expertise is in another area. Also i would not hire someone i was not comfortable with. On your wedding day you will want to be focusing on other things than the creep following you with a camera. You can find a photographer who specialises in "candid" photography where they do very little posing of their shots and just take photos where they see a good shot. The person FH and i hired will do some candid shots (where he effectively hides in the crowd or behind a tree and takes photos of everyone) as well as some posed shots. That way we get some relaxed shots as well as some posed portrait kind shots. His portfolio was amazing. He had shots of a flowergirl rolling her eyes bored as anything to a lovely posed shot of the bride and her family and the happy couple. He came highly reccommended and we can see why!Would your FH consider someone with those skills so that you can both have photos you love?
