50mm 1.8 should be around $100, it is very very fast.

Lenses for low light work have wide apertures and lots of glass - which makes them expensive, though second hand may be an option. You really have no choice about this if you want decent results, wider lenses tend to be cheaper than longer ones, so I'd work out what you'll need in terms of focal length to get your images in the bag - make a choice accordingly. Look for f2.8 or so on a zoom if possible... across the range. A fixed focal length lens will be much cheaper but less flexible, in which case you could be looking at f1.6 or f1.2 - great quality!

Your best bet for the money is the 50mm f1.8 Nikkor. This is the best quality lens, and can be found for $130. However, you might be finding yourself needing more range, which in any case, you might consider spending a bit more for the 85mm f1.8, or as someone else suggested, the 35-70mm f2.8.
