Read The Lucrative Photographer by Mark D. Till. It's all I used to get started. It explains how to figure out what you are going to photograph and how to run your business. You'll also need instructional videos, books, or classes to learn the type of photography you want to do. Good Luck.

First you need to get some good eduction in basic photography. While learning how to compose, expose, develop and print your assignments, you will get a feeling for what field of photography you are interested in pursuing. Then depending upon what field you choose, you could be shooting as a staffer in a typical 9-5 situation, sunrise to sunset.as a nature photographer, anytime 24/7 if you work for a news agency.Somewhere between school and work, you will want to work as an assistant for a pro to learn all about the business of photography and hone your basic skills.

Tt's very hard work no matter what type of photography you want to get into. It's more like a knife fight. From a clients prospective you must have a great background in business and sales as well as a top notch portfolio. To make your living as a photography you have to be willing to bust your *** day in and day out to meet deadlines. My wife was a professional wedding photographer for years and well got sick of it (not sick of photography) It's a business and it became too much business and not enough art for her. Think about what aspect of photography you would like to get into. One that will satisfy your pasion as well as make you money is hard work always no matter what you do.I highly recomend going to school and or taking classes on Photography to start.

Jamie, It's great you want to do this.Best advice I can give you is to experience yourself on someone else's nickel. In other words, find a professional studio that is reputable in your area, and apprentice under the professional. Learn as much as you can while there. Summers are a great time to do this, as the photographers need the help, and would be happy to take you under their wing. If not, go to the next one. You will learn more helping a pro than any school would.Don't wait, though. Summer's here and the weddings have begun. Busy season. Great time to learn.Good luck and have fun!

ugh its a stuggling business becuase everyone with a camera thinks they are a photographer today, and people are valueing it less. I would say its about as lucrative and becoming a resetate agent or morgagte broker right now. The upside is my schedual is flexable... the downside is that there are 3000 other competators advertising their business for pennies on the $. You will see us all working at used car lots pretty soon, photographers, realestate agents, mortage brokers, used car sales men.....
