If you're going to use the teleconverter just for the range, go with the 100-400mm: it will have either larger possible apertures or longer focal length, depending on the ratio of the teleconverter (plus it's a very nice lens). If you don't need to get that close, f/2.8 is a lot faster in real life, so you may want to choose that if you don't go for the teleconverter.

I'd go with the 70-200 2.8 & telconverter, or save for the 400 2.8 .... the 2.8 aperture makes a world of difference, especially on overcast days, night games, and indoor sports.

70-200mm f2.8 will be the better performer in less than ideal lighting.NOTE: If you attach a 2X teleconverter to ANY lens it not only doubles the focal length but also the effective aperture. Used with an f2.8 lens the lens becomess an f5.6 equivalent. Use a 1.5X teleconverter and your f2.8 lens becomes an f4.2 equivalent.
