We got engaged a month ago, and tonight is our first visit to check out a country club. Our wedding is next April. We have both made up very tentative guest lists just to get an idea of the number of people, but how do you really know who you will want at your wedding in a YEAR? I mean, friendships change, people lose touch, or make new friends. Also, single friends can get bfs/gfs, and then you have to invite them too. How do you know?

Well you don't send invited till 2 months before so by then you should know who you are still close with. As far as BF/GF everyone invited to the wedding should have the option to bring a guest, so that wouldn't change your count.

All you can do is make educated guesses and leave some room for flexibility.

Well all my guests are family so they don't go out of style. But you don't need to send out invites until 8 weeks until the wedding so thats when you make sure of things Smile

Make a "dream" list of everyone you know, and assume that singles will bring a date. Like you said, friendships change and you make new friends, but that usually averages out. You also have to prioritize what's most important to you...the perfect venue for your reception, or having everyone in your address book attend the wedding. If it's the venue, and it only holds 200 people, and your guest list is nearly twice that, you have to cut your guest list. If the people are more important, then you may have to settle for a place that's large enough to hold that number of people, but isn't exactly what you wanted. Best case scenario is you will find the perfect place and it will be large enough to hold everyone.Cutting the guest list is hard, but you probably won't have to deal with that until 4-6 months before the wedding when you're ordering your invitations.

I say the tenative list is good that is what we did, I am getting married May 2009 and my list is made up but I have already had to remove a couple of familys from my list so you really have to wait untill a little closer to the date to make your finall list to send out your invites! I would say like 3 months before that gives you plenty of time! Congrats !

Your tentative guest list is good enough for now and the numbers probably won't change much in a year. You will be adding some and dropping some, so in the end you'll probably be at about the same place.Typically, even after all that, about 20-30% will decline to attend for some reason or another.

I use theknot.com...they have a wonderful guest list manager in which you can edit and add all day long with unlimited space. My plan is this...I will cut down according to budget, then cut down according to how I feel about the participation of people that I may be inviting just so they dont feel left out. Never forget that this is your wedding, and that you must compromise with not only your fiancee', but with yourself. You will have to tweek your list a thousand times.....but you'll get it!! Good luck...when in doubt, just round up or down...and remember not everyone will RSVP, and some that RSVP may not even show up... Smile

Just as shortie said...However, you'll come up with a fair estimate of the guest list by the time the two families and the two of you get together to combine your lists - based of course on how much the two of you can afford to spend. So you get cost estimates by the best 'guestimate' you make... and it usually comes pretty close.

Your list will probably change some. That's why it's a tentative list. No one said you HAVE to invite boyfriends or girlfriends. You send out your invitations about 2 months before the wedding, so your list will hopefully be finalized then.

I think a good rule is to not invite anyone that is questionable. Acquaintances shouldn't be invited to a wedding. The people that be there should be people that have been around for a while and people that you can envision being around 10 years from now. The boyfriend/girlfriend thing, you just have to wait on that until you send out the invites.

Family always stay the same as should you close friends. The rest will just have to sorted out closer to the date, but if you arn't that close to them why do you want them at your wedding to begin with?

You have a while before you send out the invites (at least six weeks before the wedding). You won't have to give the caterer a set number until you get back your RSVPs, so you don't have much to worry about. Work with your tentative lists for now.
