I read this on a question yesterday....the bride made comment on how she almost wished hers was a NY style wedding where the guests contributed to the meal...she was from Texas I believe.????????I'm NJ born & bred & lived in NY for almost 30 years...never ever heard of a NY style wedding where guests bring the food......always thought that was a 'Pot Luck' and church functions, block parties with the neighbours, family B-B-Q's & Holidays were the gatherings for that.....been to quite a few NY weddings...all were fancy affairs in banquet halls of establishments...and the bride's parents footed the bill....My second marriage was in NY..and I & my Husband paid for it.Anybody ever heard ot this?lol if you all only knew what my sister & her husband layed out for their daughter's wedding...in NY ! in a classy historical home that had been converted to a banquet hall just for weddings....hahahahahahaha.....

I grew up 15mins from Manahattan - in NJ. Spent 30 of my 33 years there and like you i have no clue.My inclination on a "NY Style" wedding would be high priced, high rise building with spectacular city views and a price tag I'd have to win the lottery to afford."Pot Luck" is not anything I would think of in relation or connection to the term " NY Style "

I'm from NY, mind you upstate, but have attended NYS and city weddings and have never heard of this. It would be considered tacky and rude here to ask the guests to bring food, potluck style. Odd concept, can't be correct.

I dont know what tree that poster lives in.. but a NY wedding most certainly would not allow guests to contribute to their meal.. or any wedding for that matter! What a bogan.

When I think of a NYC Style wedding, I think of posh, overpriced and very upscale. I don't know what she meant. A potluck wedding would be much more in line with how I think of a country wedding.

I think I know what she confused. Many people on here from NY (including myself) when asked what to give or how much money to give as a wedding gift have said enough to cover your plate. She must have misinterpreted this to mean that the guests pay their own way or there is a cover charge or something. Even here that isn't a hard and fast rule or anything but when people say I don't want to look cheap how much should I give they give the approximate cost of their dinners. Plus the gifts at NY weddings are mainly money (99% of the gifts) where in other parts of the country they are mostly actual gifts and very little money gifts. I paid for my wedding (alot) and I certainly didn't get enough in gifts to cover the entire cost of the wedding. That wasn't what i was after though. If that wasn't what she meant then I have no idea. NY weddings are usually very expensive, over the top, lavish parties that most people in the rest of the country would consider a "platinum wedding".

I'm from Western NY - and have lived here all my life. When I hear "New York Wedding" I think money. Something over the top, very elaborate, and fancy. As for the pot-luck part of the wedding. I can't even begin to comprehend that. I think it would be very rude to ask people to bring food... Maybe it's just my NE upbringing, but to me, a potluck wedding seems very "back woods ish", "red neck ish".

that's not a NY wedding that's a very informal country style wedding and that's what i had, we got married in Maryland, in a old log and stone cabin sitting on a 250ft cliff overlooking a valley, everyone brought potluck and we did hot-dogs and hamburgers on the grill and had a good time. i wore a 1942 wedding dress and he had black blue-gene and boots on. everyone still talks how wonderful and beautiful our wedding was

I have lived in NY (NYC and Long Island bred) my whole entire life and got married last year and have never heard of anything like that. If anything, NY weddings are big affairs set in catering venues and banquet halls with TONS of food and is a bit fancier than what others may be used to.That sounds like a pot luck, which a NYer would not really ever consider for their wedding. Could she have misinterpreted it when someone mentioned that in this area, the monetary amount we give as a present is at least equivalent to the price of our plate????

I'm not from NY but from the descriptions that I have heard, potlucks and the like aren't done there because it's all about showing how much money you have.

I also read this question and was dumbfounded. I too am from NY and while in my family we always try to cover the cost of the plate, that is given in the form of a check or cash AFTER the wedding. In other words, I think this girl believes that guests give her the $$ up front before the wedding as a means to pay for it. Which of course is wrong. I think she just got confused. I also see she removed her question as well.
