My boyfriend and I have been best friends for 5+ years and have been dating/living together for almost 3 years now. We each have our own bills to pay (credit cards, etc.) and we go 1/2 on gas, electric, food, etc. for the apartment we live in.We each have our own checking/savings account.I presented the idea of opening a seperate joint account to save money for OUR future. I figure we can use that money for a wedding, a house, a vaction even! Each of us would put in xx amount of dollars per paycheck or per month evenly and neither of us would be able to touch it without the other person being there. (I had a bad experience in a previous relationship and know the precautions now!)He doesn't agree with it and doesn't want it until he's married. He is 110% stuck on this and I am 110% wanting one to SAVE for OUR future.Any suggestions?? Thanks!

If he doesn't want to do it, you cannot force him to. Don't push the point, but maybe ask him about his long-term goals and make sure they are similar to yours.

I tend to agree with your boyfriend. If he was all for it, that would be one thing, but if he's not convinced don't preassure it. Maybe he's not as convinced as you are that there will be an "Our future"?That's not saying it wouldn't be a good idea for you to open up your own account and start the saving on your own. Saving is always good! And you can spend the money in the ways you described above, or if that doesn't work out, whatever else you like.

Why dont you just each open up separate money market accounts to save for YOUR future? It doesnt have to be a joint account to make it saving for your future.I strongly agree with your boyfriend that you should keep the accounts separate until you are married. Too many people get themselves in trouble combining their accounts before they are married.

1. Do not get a joint account with someone you are not married to! Don't be a fool!2. He does not want it, you cannot force him, and in fact he is right not to do so.Save for your future -- open a savings or investment account and save regularly. If you marry in the future, you can contribute to your joint future.
