| A friend wants me to do her wedding photography. I am very comfortable taking pictures and I take good ones at that. I recently bought a Kodak Z712 that is really fun in that I can adjust some settings. The camera has a high ISO setting but no attachment for an external flash. If you are familiar with this camera should I stick with this camera or get one with an external flash? Is this even a good camera according to a professional? I think its pretty good. And one more question if I did this on the side should I still stick with this or what would be the minimum I could get away with in terms of another camera till I get more money?Batteries, memory, and case are not a problem either I have plenty for backup. |

| Personally, I don't consider anything except for an SLR to be professional quality, however good photos do come down more to the photographer and their eye for composition.Depending on whether the wedding is indoor or outdoor, you may want something with an external flash (that you can hopefully bounce off of something to avoid red eye and unsightly shadowing) if she wants to make large prints, you are going to run into problems with a high iso rating, your photos will likely be grainy. If you are seriously considering getting into photography for pay, you need to look at an SLR, the creative options are far superior, and it is what would separate you from an amateur. | most pros use DSLR cameras most of the time and medium or large format cameras some of the time for some of themthey might use your camera for snapshots but its not up to professional requirements or worka |

| Nope. No way. Any 7 megapixel "point n' shoot" camera will not do for a wedding. Tell your friend to hire a professional photographer with a 10-14 megapixel camera using interchangeable lenses and professional lighting for the group shots. You CAN however be a good "back-up" photographer, especially during the reception and dance where you can get closer to the subjects. Good Luck |

| The high ISO will be dismal. Also the Kodak shoots jpegs only, and Kodak digicams are known for their agressive compression ratios, which robs detail from the final image even at the fine setting. There is no comparison between the sensors in a consumer P&S and practically any dSLR. Your photography skill may be great (we have no way to know) You may be able to produce fairly nice images (at least as a 4x6 or 5x7) as long as you have lots of light. But if the venue is a typical dark church, then you are toast because of the ISO performance and the inadequate flash power. If the Kodak is your main camera, what are you using for backup?The mere fact that you are considering doing this "on the side" with the Kodak indicates that you are most likely nowhere near ready to shoot weddings. It ain't like doing brain surgery, but there is a minimum level of competence and equipment necessary to get the job done, even at a minimal level. |
