Sadly, it usually means sloppy photography converted to black and white. What it's meant to refer to is a more 'Candid' style of photography, than the traditional family groups and posed shots. However, it is more of a marketing word than an actual type of photography - as most couples want a mix of traditional portraits and free-flowing, candid photography of special moments.Don't worry too much about the word, just choose a photographer on whether you like their photos.

Not necessarily converted to B & W, can also be colour. If you want, check out my little brother's (actually he's 50+) site which will give a flavour. http://www.stjohnpope.com/gallery.php

There are a few differnt styles "reportage""Photojournalism""Traditional" all which you will hear thrown around and also often misuesd. But a nice blend of the three style usually results in a happy bride. Candid moments are great and very important to covering the day but so are beautiful portraits aswell. I would truely regret not having both when I got married.I hear alot of brides saying they dont want any traditional portraits taken, but most often they do(and dont know it), what they ACTUALLY dont want are traditional poses. There are some photographers who refuse to shoot portriats and only shoot candid, and some who do the opposite but most I would say have a good balance of the two, and if your looking for someone make sure they offer and understand exactly what you are looking for. While most couples dont love the "boring old lined up" family photos grandmothers and parents do love them, and tend to be dissapointed with out. The bride however loves the barefoot photo of her running through a wheat feild in her dress... was that a candid moment? probably not (so photojournalist is out), it was a set up portrait but traditional? no it was not.( traditional is now out) So I wouldnt pay much heed to the titles that photographers give themselves or claim to be, just make sure you like THEIR personal style whatever it may be called.Im a wedding photographer and I dont claim to be any of those things. Im not traditional, I do shoot portraits so I cant be called a photojounalist... i just do my best to be creative and leave the bride and groom with beautiful memories of their special day.
