I love kids and I think I would like being a teacher because its creative and also has summers off which would be good as a mom!Im also thinking of opening up a small business.....either something like a wedding place..where I would sell weddiing atire, and also have a photographer and a caterer...i LOVE cooking, and this also allows me to be creative. OR, opening up a coffee shop/italian restuarant/bakery!! Im not sure yet!Anyway, which do you think would be a better career path? Im getting my associate degree right now, and need to decide whether or not to major in education or communications!!Thanks! Also, what are the pro's and cons's of each? And, how much money do you think I can make as a small business owner? And, will I be more busy with a small business or teacher?im for sure getting my 4 year degree...im just debating if i should do it in Business communications or eduation? I really LOVE the idea of opening up my own small business, but I also dont hate the idea of teaching.

Get your 4 year degree. If you decide to teach, it's a stable job. If you decide on your own business you'll have better and solid credentials behind you with a 4 years degree. make some money first so you can have a cushion, just in case things don't work with the business. Also, once you have a 4 year degree, you may want to open a day care. At $500+ per child in your daycare, there's some serious money to be made.

Teaching:Pros - - Summers off; Evenings and Weekends usually free- Job security: tenure in 3 years - very hard to lose job after that due to Union/Association benefits.- Health Care and Retirement Benefits- Working with children- Creative outlet, creative problem solving- Substitue provided when you are ill or have personal days- Exposed to sick children - Each day is differentCons - - limited pay increases- Paying Teacher's Union/Association Dues- Dealing with parents who don't readily understand public school- Dealing with incompetent coworkers at times (may or may not include bosses)- Having to teach mandated subject matter to the exclusion of the basics. - Standardized Testing in excessOwning a Small Business:Pros:- Be your own boss- Control over employees/coworkers - in with the good, out with the bad- Working with people- Vacation time on your own terms- Creative outletCons:- possibility of unsteady income while business is being established- the average 1-5 years it takes for a small business to succeed- Long hours to become established- Must provide own healthcare plan- Overhead - $ for inventory, rent and utilities- No summers off- no substitutes when ill-----------------------------------That being said, there are merits in both professions. You could major in education and minor in business administration. You could begin as a teacher and if you didn't find it fulfilling, you could always start up your own business afterward.Good Luck.

I am both a high school teacher and a small business owner. I think both are satisfying but owning a small business, while it is hard work, is easier than dealing with children at a difficult stage in their life. Also, teaching is hard work.
