I would like to do wedding photography in my area. There are NO other wedding photog. services here so my lack of professional wedding experience will not be a huge turn away. Here, you either take them yourself, or you don't have them at all. I have a GREAT eye for photography and shot my brother in laws wedding with great results. I just want a starter camera and this one looks good. Anyone have any advice? I have been to picturetown on the NIKON web page. Also , is the 55-200mm zoom a good lens as far as depth and range? Thank you in advance for any answers. I would like comments on this camera only please as it is in my starting budget.

This camera just got a very good review in Consumer Reports. That lens is a decent all around lens.

That camera would work fine for weddings. The 55-200 lens is a good all around lens but not that great for weddings. Personally, I would get a good portrait lens like a 100mm 2.8 or even faster. Then another fast wide angle lens. Fast lenes (f2.8 or faster) are very important for weddings because of the low light situationsThen you will need a good flash with a defuser, something like the gary fong defuser. Also keep in mind that to do weddings you aboslutely need two cameras. One for backup. If your main camera messes up, breaks or even the batteries run out.....the people who are paying you are going to be really really angry if they have a wedding with no pictures.

You have never owned a 35mm SLR?First skip the D40x and get a D80. The D80 will use nearly all the lenses made by Nikon over the past thirty or so years.Second get a zoom like the 24-85mm that will cover wide angle shots as well as closeups. You will need the wide angle to capture the shots of the whole wedding group in front of the alter, wide shots at the reception, etc. Please take some classes in Wedding photography. These are once in a life time events and the bride and brides mother are expecting certain images to be shot and if you miss them you may not be in business very long.

The Nikon d40x is an excellent camera. However if you are not making prints bigger than 8x10 or a lot of aggressive cropping then I suggest that you get the d40. It is the same camera except for the size of the sensor (6.1 vs 10.1) but you will save some money (at least $200) which you can add to buy a Nikon 18 -200 VR lens and at least a SB600 flash. The 18 -200 mm has a longer zoom range than the 55- 200 mm and you get vibration reduction too. The built in flash on the camera is not strong or versatile enough compared to the SB600. But if you think you are going to be a busy wedding photographer then I suggest you get the D80 instead. It is more ruggedly built than the D40 and get the lens and flash that I suggested. Good luck.

If you have the money, go for the D200 or at least the D80. Both give you more control that the D40X don't You are on the right track about getting a 10 megapixel camera.I've been shooting weddingd for over 15 years. If you have any questions let me know. I have a whole bunch of tips on dealing with people and surviving the day without going bald.

Great advice above... I agree with the idea of getting a D80 instead of the D40X. It is "only" another $200 and the added flexibility is well worth it.I'd think that the 55-200 is not the best choice for a wedding. While I think Nikon's 17-55 would be a pretty good choice, it costs more than the camera. I love my 18-200 VR for general shooting, but frankly, I would not recommend it for weddings. It's a pretty good lens, but you will have to spend some time making corrections in Photoshop on your wide shots.Consider getting a D80 with the 18-135 lens. Honestly, I don't think it is the same quality as the 24-85 that fhotoace suggested, but if you are starting out with ONE lens in your kit, I think you need to allow for a tight room or a distant shot and the 18-135 will allow that. You're going to need a flash and you should only consider the Nikon SB600 or SB800, with the SB800 offering more lighting solutions that you can learn to use down the road. The SB600 would not be a handicap, though.
