| i take concert photography very seriously.as of right now i would like to buy a nikon d50 to "learn the ropes". is this a good camera? if not what other camera should i get?first i'd like to take it from the basics, and then possibly purchase a nikon d80 once i perfect my skills.and what basic equipment, or "add ons" (specific lense and flashes) do i need to start off? this is all for concert photography.thanks! |

| I am a Canon user, but I'll try to answer your question with as much as I know about Nikon. I'm also going to mostly answer with concert photography in mind.First thing I would look at regarding your camera body, is it's ISO range. Although I generally try to stay away from using ISO 3200 or 1600, it is nice to be able to bump it up if it is needed. If I'm not mistaken, the D50 can only go up to ISO 1600. If you can afford it, a used Nikon D200 is probably the way to go or start off by buying the D80.As for lenses, I generally use a 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.2, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8. Look for the equivalent in the Nikon system. You'll find that you need fast lenses, even more so if you get something like the d50 and don't have the option to go to ISO 3200 if needed.For concerts, you really want to avoid flash if you aren't already banned from using flash. Outside of concert photography, a flash is a good thing to have. I would get a unit that can give you full control over it. Some of the basic Speedlights don't do this. I would probably get the Nikon SB-800. Since flash produces a hard shadow, I recommend getting a diffuser that fits the flash or a small bounce hood that usually Velcros around your flash. |
