I would suggest a Canon AE-1 or a Nikon FG with a 28-70mm zoom.

The Nikon FM2 and a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor would be a great combo.

I have this camera for a long time and used it a lot, and it hasn't failed me, yet. It's especially good for beginners, and with today's price, it is much affordable. This is a site on Amazon. You can also see the features it has. Nikon has the basic features same as the Minolta - Minolta has more though.http://www.amazon.com/Minolta-Maxxum-XTsi-Camera-28-80mm/dp/tech-data/B000065935/ref=de_a_smtdThis is one of a real good camera by Nikon. Although it is not the same model, I got my neice the Nikon N75, and it's just tremendous.http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-N80-Camera-28-80-Lens/dp/B00012BVQ4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1208505110&sr=1-5Both are fully manual capable as fully automatic capable. Even the focus. It is lighter than the older camera. Batteries are expensive for these camera so, I would suggest to by a rechargable one (eBay has a lot of inexpensive rechargable batteries and batteries charger) Have fun!

You need a camera which allows you to set the following manual:Focus (distance)exposure time (shutter speed)apertureand which takes regular 35mm filmYou don't necessarely need a SLR (single lens reflex) camera a rangefinder or viewfinder camera would also fulfill that criteria.Modern point and shoot cameras (film or digital) are not usable - as they are far too automated. As you are inexperienced I would suggest that you find a shop which sells used cameras - there are thousands of models available in the used market which you can use. Actually having it in your hand and having someone to explain the basics of that camera to you (film loading, rewinding, setting distance, exposure time and aperture)will be helpful. With so many different cameras which would be useable in your class I do not want to point out a single model. I really suggest that you look for a place selling cameras (and only cameras) where you can hold the camera in hands before you buy to get a feeling for it. You will also find that there are a lot of cameras that are fit for your class which are sold at rather low prices - not because they perform badly but because demand goes a different way.So good luck with finding one and enjoy your class!

You can find a used Nikon N90s with a lens online for not a lot of money. Can be used full auto or full manual. A few years ago I got an N90s, 35-70mm f/3.3-4.8 lens and an SB-22 speedlight for $150.www.bhphotovideo.comwww.cametacamera.comwww.ebay.com

My suggestion would be a Canon FTb with a 50mm lens. This is a great, sturdy camera from the 1970s. This is a totally manual camera, with only a built-in light meter-so it forces you to think and really learn about exposure. This combination should be available for $50 or less.

All of the above are good cameras, but I must say I have a soft spot in my heart for the Pentax K1000. It's a real workhorse of a camera, and it is FULLY manual. Even if the temptation hits for you to pop off a little on Automatic, you can't. I wish ya luck in the class! I remember my first class - the first picture I printed is still up in my apartment. I don't want to ruin anything, but just know... Printing is an amazing and beautiful experience...
