My wife and I have decided to both change our names instead of my wife taking my last name. Would it be easier if I changed my last name to the new last name, then have my wife change hers for reasons of marriage? The only problem with this is we have been married over a year. Due to scheduling problems, international travel, and the fact that my wife is a legal resident and not a citizen, caused us to push back this problem much farther than we should have. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you've both got something to hide. You change your name in court.

I am doing this exact thing right now. Because you are married, you as the man should change your name first. You may be able to get them both done though if you can get a judge to agree. Go and search name change and you will see several companies that can help you with all the questions. Legalcpu is one. I do know that if you have a criminal record or a bankruptcy in the last 5 years, they most likely will not let you do it.
