My fiance and I are on a budget for our marriage this August but we really like the look of having one small cake for us to cut at the top, followed below by miniature "cakes" - one tiny cupcake-sized cake for each person. There are many photos of this on google (just search "miniature wedding cakes"). Would this be more expensive to make than just a regular weding cake, or would it be cheaper? We would like the fondant either way.

Its more expensive.edit: sunny, she is asking about minature cakes, NOT cupcakes. yeah, cupcakes would be cheaper but she wants actual fondant cakes. they are extrememly time consuming and difficult. i promise you, they are more expensive. i'm guessing something like this is what the OP is wanting. http://www.oahuwedding.com/uploaded_images/Just-Fabulous-seashell-cakes-individual-789495.jpghttp://www.cakemiss.gobot.com/images/minicakes_360x269.jpg

anyone who says it's more expensive is wrong. i got that for my wedding and it was CHEAPER than a normal wedding cake. we looked at quite a few different bakeries before our wedding, and every single place was either the same price as a normal cake, or slightly cheaper. i never came across anywhere where it was more expensive.http://today.maganda.org/jpg/wedding_cake1.jpg

Are you talking cupcakes or actual small cakes?Cupcakes will be less expensive, or equal. Small cakes will be more expensive.Small cakes are generally decorated with a good amount of detail, obviously adding to the cost. Cupcakes generally are just simply frosted, maybe with a monogram (last name initial) or simple piping/sprinkles/sugar dusting.

you can always go to walmart if you have one near ya. Their two tier cake starts from $75 and then up depending on your decorations. You can also have a grooms cake which is $13. Good luck!

I am having this exact idea! It's actually not cheaper. The total for 200 mini cakes (fondant with sugar roses on top) and a cake on top for us to cut is $550. The cakes came out to $2.50 each. And that is for a fairly simple mini cake. If you want anything more elaborate expect a bigger bill. I just wanted something other than a traditional cake and they're just so cute!

fondant may be pretty but it is grose.. go to a place and have a taste testing. Smaller cakes are more expensive.. i have found adding fondant to a cake (which they price by the slice typically) was $2.00 + per person. OR you can be cheaper about it all and get a cake for the 2 of u and have sheet cakes in the back.. NO ONE knows. BUT fondant is grose.. we found a place that they made it themselves.. it was the best tasting of all we tried.. but still nothing i would choose to eat!

Maybe... I'm not sure, I suppose you're looking at 5-15 dollars per person depending on decorations, and where you order from. Also, fondant is more expensive. I'm not sure how many guests you have and what you consider expensive. I would guess for really nice individual cakes, you'd pay 10 per cake. If you were the DIY type, you could make the cakes yourself which would be really cheap. You could frost them and decorate however you wished. Personally I would keep the decoration very simple. Less is more in this case. Fondant is beautiful and if you practice easy to use. Another alternative is cupcakes. I know this isn't exactly what you have in mind, but they are actually cheaper than a wedding cake. To have my cake done it would have been over 600 dollars. Because we've decided to move our wedding outdoors we opted out of a wedding cake and ordered gourmet cupcakes, 325 dollars. The cupcakes even tasted better (fondant tastes terrible, but is beautiful), and we got more of a variety of flavors.

Wow. If you are on a budget....totally forget that idea. That is a HUGE expense. Why? Because each "miniature" needs to be decorated. When purchasing wedding cakes, the cost is factored in by detemining (1) flavors; (2) fillings; (3) time involved for decorating. There would be LOTS more time involved in decorating many little miniature cakes rather than a big tiered cake....believe me.

Way more expensive. These aren't cupcakes. They are decorated cakes and you are paying for the labor to make them. Especially if each one is covered with fondant. I would charge quite a bit ($7.00+) per cake since each one has to be covered in fondant and decorated. That is a lot of work. Each cake could take 15 minutes to decorate . If you have 150 cakes you are talking a full work week dedicated to just your order.

We're doing this too, half in my favorite flavor, half in his. We're doing very simple cakes with plain icing garnished with berries. The cakes do seem as if they cost just as much, but we're going to check the prices at grocery store bakeries.
