how can you tell people they have to pay for themselves nicely. normally if your going to invite people to something your expected to pay. thats just tacky if you ask them to pay.

yeah I'd have to say that's kinda rude. There is really no nice way of telling your guests that. You either include everyone --meal and all-- or you shouldn't have a 'wedding'. Why not make your own food and have a reception at a family members house? Make salads, sandwiches? Buying that stuff and making it yourself (have family and friends help) is going to be fairly inexpensive. Best of luck though in whatever you do, and congrats!!! Smile

WOW that's a sticky situation. How about.... Bride and Groom would like you to join them at name of Restaurant for a celebration, cake and champagne will be served. However because of budget issues you will be responsible for your own meal.Thank you for understanding!

Its real simple ... have the cake cutting and champagne in the church hall, don't go to the restaurant. That's pretty tacky that you want people to attend, but they have to pay their own way.You are the HOSTS of the wedding - you are supposed to pay the costs!

Are the cake and champagne going to be served, for free? Then just say, "Cake and Champagne Reception to follow at XYZ"Don't mention food at all. Let them know what will be provided, they can deduce that the other stuff is available if they want to pay.As a side note, I do agree with the posters saying that this is not the best way to host a party of any sort. Why not have less people and provide food?

why dont u just hva a meal at home with all ur loved ones or at some family /friends house that is big enough 2 accomodate the number of peopie ur having.Theres no reason u cant have a reception that is inexpensive, so I really don't recomend the whole everyone pays for their own reception, Id rather not have a reception at all than do it that way.

wow. are you serious? so you invite your friend and family to you wedding... who i'm sure will come bearing gifts... then you want to let them psy for their meals... thats just ridiculous. when u invite someone to do anything its usually means its on you.. not them. weddings suppose to be a joyous moment.... i suggest either u get a cheap cater asap or just serve cake and campagne and for get meals all together...

we are having a small wedding, and on the RSVP card I wrote a little poem..."Reception parties & all the frillsWe would LOVE to share, but can't pay the bills.Your welcome to come and dine in Dutch,To share in our beginning & we would love that so much."I do not think it is tacky when you are having a small wedding (there might me 15 people at our wedding...all close family and friends) and we spoke to them about it, told them to not bring presents just themselves and have a nice lunch with us.

Since you are on a budget; did you think of having a dessert reception???Cake, Brownies, Candy, Ice Cream. This way you can invite them all and not have to be put in an awkward situation of asking them to pay for it. "Cake and champagne toast reception to follow"You can write that down on the invites, so people will know what to expect. It's imperative to have your reception outside meal time (mid afternoon, mid morning or late at night) so people will not expect a full meal.Good luckPS/ Having a reception on a restaurant during meal time and not paying for the meal is quite rude. If you are doing this, then there is no way of not coming across as cheap and crass. Sorry.

Simple. Exclude the opportunity for meals entirely. Don't have it at a restaurant. In many cases such as this the cake-cutting and champagne toast is held immediately after the ceremony at the church hall/basement.You should separate the snack/toast from any dining. I'd consider calling for a potluck dinner that evening at a hall. My mom and step-dad just did a big barbeque with burgers and dogs.

I don't think its tacky or rude and I love the poem idea but most people don't send back rsvp cards. Maybe include it in the invite. If its for celebrations, love and support, I wouldn't mind paying for my meal at a LOVED ones wedding. Although, I would consider perhaps not getting a wedding gift at the time. There will be other opportunities for gift getting, like say, a house warming get-together. In Latino families, its very customary for everyone to chip in for any celebration because the purpose isn't to have a materialistic show. The point is to celebrate. Good luck
