How do I keep the pillars from sinking into the bottom layer of the cake. Each layer is held by four pillars. The pillars hook into the top part of the cake plate but no where on the bottom. Is it safe to insert a dowel into the bottom cake and rest the pillar on top of the dowel? It seems kind of unstable. What is the best way? Thanks!

Some Bakers put a plastic plate in the center of the bottom layer and the dowels from the other tiers do go next to that plate on the bottom tier.I would need an outline of the cake to ask my baker.I see him do it all the time.I cut one at a wedding once and there were several dowels throughout the cake.Of course I needed a pliers to pull the smaller thick ones out.But in a three tiered cake, he had about ten to 12 pins or dowels( some longer to reach the bottom tier and shorter ones at the top).He makes them very sturdy and dosent seem to care about how many pins are needed to stabilize the cake.
