My fiance and I are trying to save money on our wedding, so we were just planning to hire a photographer for formal portraits before/after the ceremony and the pictures during the ceremony. We know lots of artistic people (like people who go to school for design and photography) that will be at the wedding and we were hoping to ask them to take the rest of the pictures at the reception (the first dance and cake cutting, and then just candid shots for the rest of the night).I've heard that you have to book wedding photographers in 6-8 hour time blocks, is it normal to just book them for 2 hours (ceremony and 1 hour for portraits afterwards) and one location (the church)? Thanks!I don't want to "skimp" on photography (thanks for the warning) really the problem is my fiancé's brother IS a photographer, BUT he's in the wedding party, so he can't do the portraits of the whole party together.I have no doubt that if he does the rest of the photos (like at the reception) they will turn out beautiful, because his photography always looks amazing.

My photographer offered packages for 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. Some places do this; others won't. But they are out there. Just call around to local photographers and see what they say. I am sure that you will be able to find someone. Good luck!! ♥

You can hire them for only 2 hours, but depending on the place they might still charge you the same- you probably wouldn't be able to do it with a corporate group of photographers. Maybe look for an independent.

Please, please, PLEASE don't skimp on the photographer... you will regret it. I have seen pleanty of friends that did this and later decided the little bit more money would have been worth it. If you want to cut cost, see if you can just pay the photographer for his time and then buy the rights to all the photos (the photographer will give you ALL the photos on a CD). Then you can print them elsewhere, but at least you have the photos. Good luck.

You may be able to find one that will do that. It will be easier if you aren't getting married at a popular time on a popular day (ex. 7 p.m Sat. in June). My photographer offered a certain package but no time constraints, so he will stay as long or short as we like.

First, I'd suggest asking your artistic/photographer friends/family if they mind doing this. A few of my cousins did this with other family members, and the ones that took the pictures had told me it took all the fun out of the wedding. They're there to be guests, not have to worry about getting the right pictures. Then again, some family members would love to do this. SO ask and make sure first..Yes, there are plenty of photographers who will do an hourly rate. My photographer had packages that started at 3 hours and went up to 8, with OT by the hour available. And I would consider at least three hours. The pre-wedding is at least a half hour, the hour ceremony, and at least an hour of formals. You also want to give yourself time so you're not rushed and you don't feel pressured into paying for the OT. It's cheaper to get the extra hour "just in case" before hand because a lot of times you'll get something extra in the package that you wouldn't get for the extreme price of just the time.

All the ones that I have called have minimum fees, so it does not matter how long they are there for. A lot of them sell packages that are like....ceremony only or two hours, four hours and so on. The ones I was interested in all had a min price no matter how many hours. Keep looking....also try to find out if any of the quests are photogs and hit them up for a little help. Never hurts to ask and they would be honored most likely.

Yes, of course, just check around in your area.We only had formal portraits done after the ceremony, at the studio. We didn't have to book for any particular length of time, though either. I think we were there an hour and a half or so - there were 10 of us all together in the wedding party. My brother in law took photographs at the ceremony and reception.(Just remember, in any photos you have done before the ceremony, you will always know that in them you and he aren't married. This happened to a friend of mine - they thought it wouldn't matter, just thought they would get them done before and get it out of the way, but in time later, it really did bother her.)

Some will do this, but many won't. Try looking at www.projectwedding.com for photogs based on price - some of the photogs on there have links to their own personal sites that give info about pricing and packages. I liked that site because some people have gone on their to give reviews of the vendors. Also, try looking at photogs listed on www.theknot.com or even in your local yellow pages (or at www.superpages.com). Good luck!

My sister is getting married and her photographer is a freelance friend of hers. When she was looking around though, there were people willing to sign for a few hours, especially if nobody else was looking to book them on that day, to make a few extra dollars. Its a great way to save money!

We booked our photographer for just a few hours. I didn't want a photographer following me around all day, taking pictures of me looking wistfully out the window and lovingly at my shoes. We also knew we had some excellent amateur photographers in the crowd who would take good candid photos (and they did). Instead of using a wedding photographer, we used a person who specializes in corporate event photography. She was much more used to being booked for smaller amounts of time, and for getting specific shots. She's done some weddings, so she had all that stuff down, too. Her rates were much better than wedding photgraphers', and she was much more flexible.
