I've been a professional Wedding Photographer for several years. I've seen the trend move away from formal posed portraits to a more photojournalistic point of view. I've seem BIG hair, BIG viels and BIG sleeves make way for a more sleek and elegant look. And you BET that for my OWN weding this September that I'll be pretty picky about my wedding photos! (my wedding is being shot by my two best assistants.) What are The Rest of you looking for in your wedding photography? (and your photographer!)

Well I think I want something different then what I've seen but I've seem some shorts I've always loved I want to recreat on my wedding. A shot of the bride getting ready but the picture is taken of the mirror but you see the bride in the mirror. Then I saw a picture of a flower girl looking out a window as everyone prepared. A phto of the couple in the background out of focus but focused in on the bouquet-kinda artsy! And then candid shot od the couple kissing and holding eachother.

I am getting married next year as as a photographer myself, I have been very picky about choosing what type of pictures I want to remember my big day. Personally, I think that a few posed shots of the families and brides maids/grooms men are good to have, but I really prefer the photojournalistic style that is becoming popular. For me it is about having something unique and different rather than unnatural looking shots. I also like a lot of the pictures I have seen where the artist experiments with color or texture in different ways. I think that using those types of techniques would make any bridal pictures more interesting.

Professional, courteous and friendly. Good quality work and the ability to capture moments on film that are not only candid but elegant and professional looking. And above all else, a good price. I'm more than willing to pay good money for time and effort, but I refuse to pay for substandard photos at a top dollar price. Unfortunately that is the gist of photographers in my area. One of them charges $300 just to schedule an appointment with her (no photos, just the appointment). What I would like to see is a good photographer that does great work for less than an arm and a leg. I could seriously use those parts later!

One photo that never seems to get taken is 'look' on groom's, face when he sees bride for first time, parents/guests as vows are being said. The problem is, as a 'present day' bride, you want pictures of your facial expressions, head shots, great detail of church, hall, cake, etc. Ten or twenty years down the road, you are really, really appreciate of a photographer who had the foresight and took some good 'full length' detail pictures of you (bride) before babies, life, age distorts your body.

When I went looking for a photographer when I got married, I was looking for a few things...* A combination of styles--both photojournalistic and traditional. I asked to see their work because I love photojournalistic, however, didn't want ALL my photos like that--I did want some more traditional ones. I looked at how creative he was and how he captured shots. * His personality. Since the photographer will be hanging out with us all day, we needed to like him and get along. If I got a bad vibe from one right away, I eliminated them. * Their willingness to work with us and take direction. Some photographers don't listen to the couples and that makes for a difficult time.* They don't watch the clock so much. As most people know, weddings have a tendency to have elements of surprise and I wanted a photographer that would stay with us.It's also important that the wedding photographer kinda blend in...I find that some of the best photographers are the ones you don't even know are there. I was INCREDIBLY happy with my photographer and was amazed at the shots he got because they were moments I missed completely or wasn't even aware of.

I want someone reliable, that will be there no matter what, and at a good price while getting the pics back on CD.As far as the actual photos - I want someone that can use the camera without things being out-of-focus. I don't much care for "styles" of photography but rather the ability to take clear pictures and get them back to me.If it weren't for the fact that I want my friends/family to have fun at my wedding, I would ask them to take pics and not worry about hiring someone.

I love photography that makes creative use of natural light. I love the photos that are taken when people don't know they are being watched.I love photos that have atmosphere (particularly a fantastic/mystical feel)I love photos that don't have traditional poses.I love those out of the ordinary photos (eating dripping icecream together, the couple walking under an umbrella in the pouring rain, dressed up in their black tie drinking champagne in a dingy alley etc)Plus the photographer has to be professional and know what they are doing, not be too bossy but know how to direct nicely and we have to get along with them too.I also like competitive pricing and i would not hire someone if they didn't give us the negative/high quality digital copies.

I want those few traditional formal family shots. Other then that, I just want my photographer to go nuts and capture as much as she wants. I definitely want the photojournalistic point of view. I think that more special moments will be caught that way. I'm also not a fan of having my picture taken, so if I don't know its happening, the picture will look a lot better. My photographer uses digital cameras now too, which I love. She'll be putting all the pictures on cd's for me so I can do whatever I want with them. She'll also be giving me a box of 4X6 proofs (without proof printed on it) that I can put in my wedding album.

Ive found a photographer that is a mix between the two. He has some that are posed (which you want some of those) and the photo journalistic stlye. I dont want everyone else's pictures, I want my own.Black and whites are a big must for me, as im a black and white photo junkie, i took photo classes just for black and whites. The time they spend, do all day packages, not a 4 hour day and well see what we can fit it. Give proofs the the clients, so they have all their photos, you can tell them you have to do the reprints even.Make sure you offer an album, if even just a small one, a bride wants their album, ill have to purchase several more than just mine, as both of our parents are divorced and remarried... so parents books that arent expensive are wonderful, and also be sure to do a different album, i love the ones with a big picture across two pages and then the small photos added to the page and stuff.
