Ok, so I switched schools senior year of college in order to follow my passions. It took me a few extra years and now at age 25 I have a BFA in Photography. I am working as an assistant to a well known and established wedding photographer but this is not the career for me. I would like to become a travel photographer/photojournalist but I have no idea how or where to pursue it. I have the technical skills and a strong portfolio but I don't know whom to contact, whom to show my work, etc.. I am willing to intern, apprentice, whatever it takes. I just feel lost.

we could make like a club or something. we are different in one aspect. i do not have a strong portfolio or at least i do not know how to put together a strong portfoilo. i do know how to make good looking photos. i am not well traveled and my images are more concept/art then travel/journalism. i found that internships wanted people with a bigger backgrounds. so i have some great ideas about what i would like to do and i want to travel to see it all. so i joined the airforce. i do not tell you this for you to join up, but i tell you this because i knew i wanted to travel and build a protfolio and have some life experience along the way. as frustrating as this is right now, it will only get better once you find a way to get what you want.for example...i knew a girl who wanted to be a african photographer. i told her to head straight to africa. she never did and from her myspace blogs, she is not happy, so i will give you the same advice. where do you want to be and what do you want to do? it is not a question of having contacts, its a question of do you have the guts? because i am pretty sure that you have a specific idea in your head and you need to find a way to do that. you cant wait for someone to understand or see your brilliance. you will never get to africa waiting for someone to buy you the plane ticket. be the entrepreneur. and then when you summit something to time or ngm, and it gets picked up, it is because you did.so i am saying...just find a way to get out there. my problem is i dont have any money, or maybe i would be backpacking across europe right now (actually i am glad that i dont because i think the airforce will be heathy for me in the way experiences go, so in four years, maybe i will be doing just that.) while i summit my work to magazines and galleries. and if it doesnt happen right away, i will do other things, because all of lifes knowledge will make me better. im just gonna do it with a camera in my hands. good luck.

Now you look for a job as a staffer on a publication, like a magazine or newspaper as well as a large companies PR department. My first job was with an animal theme park shooting both PR and scientific photography for the scientists at the parks research division. You can also start talking to successful studios and tray to obtain a position as an assistant. There you will learn the business side of photography and the special techniques unique to certain fields of photography not covered by many schools (there just isn't the time to cover it all).
