This is the wedding cake I'm thinking of, but 1. I don't know if it would look good aesthetically, and 2. I don't know how hard or easy it would be to make...It's an Independence Day wedding(next year, lol), so I was thinking 5 equal sized tiers, separated by short glass cylinders with white flowers in them. The layers would be star-shaped, but each one slightly skewed, so that the overall effect looks like a star column that got twisted. Three layers(1,3, & 5) would be white with a blue ribbon around the base and pearl blue swiss dots, and two layers(2 & 4) would be blue with a white ribbon around the base and pearl white swiss dots. Since it's nearly impossible to find a star-shaped cake stand let alone one with equal sizing for all tiers, lol...in each crevice of the star formation would sit a single red rose...but only on four sides. Along one side, down the entire length of the cake would be a spread of white roses. What do you think of this cake? Does it sound ok?.........How hard or easy does it seem to make? Any suggestions? Thanks. (=

It seems like it might be a bit of a pain to make, yet with how big the wedding cake business is now and days you can find a place that will do it, it might be a bit pricey because its so elaborate and a unique design.

It sounds sort of "busy" to me. Like, too much going on.I'm not sure, though. I like the sound of the ribbons along the base. I love the look of fondant ribbon. It's so cute.I was sort of confused by the "twisted" idea of the stars. Usually, if you twist a star a little, it's only going to look misaligned or out of whack, and not "twisty."Oh, and unless the bakery has star-shaped moldings, which, I don't know, maybe they would, but -- it sounds like they'd have to cut the cake, which makes it almost impossible to frost, because the rough, inner part of a cake crumbles if you try to frost it. It's a huge, huge pain. This kind of extra labor would really drive the price up.May I suggest something a bit more simple? Maybe a four-tiered, rounded-edge fondant cake in smooth white, with bright red roses (a true summer flower) or gladiolas, and smaller blue flowers? You'd get the red-white-and-blue thing, but it'd be very subtle, and the real flowers would look so summery and beautiful. Here's an example:http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/Small_Wedding_Cake_4.jpgOR ... maybe instead of a cake, you could do something more funky and festive, like three huge towers of cupcakes. My cousin did this at her wedding -- she had chocolate cupcakes and white cake cupcakes. The chocolate ones had red berries on them, and the vanilla cupcakes had blueberries and blackberries on them. Here's an idea for what this would look like: (Imagine the purple ribbon as red ribbon, and maybe blueberries on the cupcakes!)http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/wedding-cupcakes.jpgSome people also get a small, detailed cake that sits on the very tippy top:http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/cake318.jpghttp://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/cake139a.jpgI also found this, and it seemed so Fourth of July to me, and so Better Homes and Gardens and Martha Stewart at the same time -- which, for some reason, I always associate with weddings. (It also looks easy to make, which really helps with price.)Isn't this yummy-looking?http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/Small_Wedding_Cake_1.jpgIf you're looking for something you could do yourself, I say go for the cupcakes! They're so cute! And easy to decorate!Or that many-tiered vanilla cake and strawberry thing. It looks like it would be pretty simple to make/decorate, but would still taste really, really good! While I was looking, I stumbled across the picture of a bouquet, which I thought you might like:http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj91/ihearthobbes/patriotic-bouquet.jpg

It sounds hard to make. Maybe you should just pay a shop to make it for you xD Oh God, I thought it was going to be some crappy tacky idea but your idea sounds pretty good.

It doesn't sound like the simplest thing to make, but it sounds absolutely beautiful.I would go for it if you know you can make it, weddings are a time to be remembered and a bad cake doesn't help the festivities!Go for it, it sounds lovely!

It sounds difficult if not impossible. The hands of the stars will be a problem. They need to be held up, but all that weight will make it impossible. Aesthetically, its a nightmare. There is too much going on. But, people have different tastes. So if this is yours, dont listen to my opinion. You might consult a baker who sketch things out and tell you whats feasible and whats not.

You could do this instead of the cylinders http://www.cakesunlimited.net/thumbnails/S56.JPGI think what you have planned would be very pretty, but I would be worried about how well the structure would stay (the star points). You may want to do a few trial runs to make sure that the cake will not crack and fall apart.

I think this is one you may want to see before giving a final OK. If your idea is to make the focus of the cake the star, this illusion may be lost with the white flowers down the length of one side and red roses stuck in the crevices. The flowers themselves, although pretty, may just mask the form of the star itself. It may be one that unless you point it out to people, they may not even notice it.

since they would all be equal sized layers it might get a little heavy and topple over, but if you could find a way for it to stay stable it sounds cool.

I'm not sure cake layers can support all those glass cylinders...especially if the center of gravity isn't the CENTER.

The problem is going to be supporting all of those layers of the stars. The points can easily break and if you just put a glass column in the center they will break off. Plus if they are equally sized it will look weird. The white roses cascading down will be pretty, as will the red roses. If you want just have a 5 tier star cake stacked (not separated) in smaller graduated sizes. I suggest you don't make this yourself due to the time, and expertise needed so the cake doesn't fall over or collapse on itself.
