He holds on to it as he stands next to the groomsmen. When the rings are called for, he walks over to the bride and groom and they take them

He doesn't hand it to any one, the ring bearer holds up th pillow and whoever needs the rings Bride, Groom or celebrant they take whatever ring. The only time that any one else other than the bride and groom reach for the ring cushion is when it is a religious ceremony and the priest takes the rings for blessing then hands the bride and Groom their appropriate ring.hope that helps.

The ring bearer, I thought, put forward the pillow at the moment that the ring is to be put on the brides finger by the groom [and the same for the bride, if it is a double ring event].[ The 'officiant' ought to be holding the book [bible and/or vows], and as he has his hands full can not do 'the ring thing'. ]

If he is very young, it may be best to tie a pair of faux rings on the ring pillow and give the real ones to the best man for safe keeping. This is also wise in case you’re faced with a ring bearer who comes down with stage fright at the last minute and refuses to walk down the aisle. It is not typical for him to hand it to the officiant, the groom may untie the ring from the pillow when it is needed.

The ring bearer can do 2 things:He can stand next to the groomsmen and then give them to the bride and groom or officiant at the ring exchange. After he walks down the aisle, he can hand the pillow to the officiant who can put it on the table, then the ring bearer can sit down. I was just a maid of honour at a wedding where they did this; they put the ring pillow on the table in front of the unity candles. The ring bearer was 4 years old and it was a half house ceremony so it was better for the kid to be in a seat. (They also had the flower girl sit after she walked down the aisle.) The rings looked pretty sitting there before the ring exchange and made for great pictures.

I didn't read all the answers but mine is different from all the ones I did read. How it's been done at every wedding I ever went to and how we are doing it in mine is like thisThe ring bearer walks up the aisle with the pillow, walks over to the maid of honor and she takes the grooms ring off, then he walks over to the best man and he takes the brides ring off, then the ring bearer stands up with the groomsmen.
