Barking and sniffing the door and other things.Tomorrow is that day when the door is going to be ringing constantly for 1-2 hours. What technique do you suggest for keeping your dogs calm? Where will your dogs be when trick or treaters arrive? In the backyard? Busy with some friends? | My dog doesn't bark at people ringing the door. Come to think of it, he doesn't bark much at all. If your dog goes crazy, he might do better locked in a crate for an evening. Besides, he can't get to the candy from there.Judge is going trick or treating with me. I don't think I'll ever lose the spirit! |

| I am dreading tomorrow more than you could ever know. Honestly, I was thinking of doing the old bowl of candy outside the door with the "We're not home, take one!" sign... at least one kid would get a whole lot of candy.... |

| love the quote~~Luckily for my dogs but not so lucky for the kids here trick or treating was this weekend. My dogs were in the house while we had candy at the front gate. I trained my dogs that it is okay to bark at the door but to get behind me while I answer it...once I give the "go away" command they settle into their beds or go play in the other room. It has helped trememdously. And I was lucky, I have a super smart Malamute who is my first dog of this pack and he taught the others to follow suit! |

I keep the older Lab in his crate - Several years ago, he wiped out an entire bowl of candy (He was fine, other than a few days of nasty diarrhea and an x-ray a week later to ensure all the wrappers made it out...).It's the 8 month old Aussies first Halloween, so I'm not sure how he'll react - He goes crazy when the doorbell rings, so he'll probably end up in his crate too.In any case, I'm in Germany on business right now, so my husband is going to have to deal with it without me  Only 45 minutes to go till tomorrow for me, but they don't celebrate it here... |

| The ONLY thing my dogs bark at is the doorbell (poor pizza man thinks he's going to be mauled to death until he sees two goldens with wagging tails when the door opens). We've tried training (with friends coming to the door and giving them treats and so forth) but it doesn't work - I think the bell just startles them into barking an alarm. Thankfully, we don't get many trick or treaters where we live, but often on Halloween we go for a walk and enjoy the activity in the neighborhood and then nobody has to worry about the doorbell (someone stays to take care of candy distribution or we put the bowl outside since don't get many anyway). |

My dogs will be with me in the basement and a movie... and tennis balls. They LOVE tennis balls. Why should the kids have all the fun?  They'll hear the doorbell and bark, but I hope to learn ways to distract them - perhaps I'll work on training them to sit when they hear the doorbell? Ooh, ambitious! Awesome questions, and I love the quote!! |

| The dogs I have now I don't have much problem with, but I will gate them in the kitchen. (some people don't like dogs or are afraid - no matter how small) When I had my Min Pin, I had to lock her away in my bedroom at the other end of the house. She hated strangers. I made it comfy for her with her bed, food and toys and would go in often and let her know what a good girl she was. |

| We don't get kids here.My dogs do bark when someone comes to the door at other times. I have one who is super yappy. I have found that if we can control her, the others won't get upset at all. She (the instigator) starts it all. So we hold her and touch her nose saying "NO" to try to keep her quiet. If she continues to bark we hold her by the scruff and under the back end in a firm manner and say "NO" everytime she starts to make a noise. If a visitor comes in, she has to be locked away in a crate. The problem with that is that she continues to YAP, YAP, YAP. Sometimes it works to close her in a crate upstairs in my daughter's room, far away from any visitor. The other dogs are fine as long as she is gone. |
