I am getting married at the court house with only my boyfriend's and my immediate family present. I still want to announce to my relatives that we are getting married, however, I am not going to follow up with an invitation because I have no intention of inviting them to the actual "ceremony." Most of our family lives out of state and would probably not attend anyway. What is the protocol for this situation? Is the wedding announcement typically sent after the wedding?Ok, forget the "Save the Date" notion. I need your advice on the announcements. Before the wedding, after or both?

A "save the date" card is send to let people know to save the date and that they will be getting an invitation soon. If you are not inviting them to anything then do not send a "save the date". Send an announcement instead.

You shouldn't send a save the date as that tells the guest that they have an invitation in the future. You should send a nice note that can look like a save the date notifying your family and friends of your upcoming wedding, as they will probably want to send you a gift to congratulate you! This way they feel connected to you as friends and family on your special day without being there.

save the date cards are intended for people to find out the date of the wedding so that they can make travel arrangements etc before hand in order to attend. if you are not going to invite them, don't send save the date cards. just send 'announcements'

"Save The Date" cards are intended primarily to let out of town guests know about the date of your wedding so they can think ahead about their arrangements. Almost every one I've seen has had "formal invitation to follow" at the bottom and for a good reason. If you're not inviting them to a reception or ceremony then there is not a date for them to save. :)If you want to announce you're getting married you have 2 options:1. Send out an engagement announcement and in it mention, "John Smith and Jane Doe with be married in a small intimate ceremony on INSERTDATEHERE."2. Wait until after the ceremony and send a "Just Married" announcement. I think a photocard would be a great idea for this. Again, make sure to mention it was an intimate ceremony.

No, not if you're not inviting them. What would they be saving the date for? Would you be having a reception you wanted them to come to? If yes, then I could see sending Save the Date cards, but you'd also still send invitations to that. Save the Date cards are sort of pre-invitations for those who will be traveling long distances, letting them know the date so they can make travel and hotel arrangement early enough to make it practical to attend your wedding. If you're not inviting them to your wedding or reception, there is really no point to sending them. You can always send out announcements after the event, if you'd like.EDIT: Definitely send the announcement AFTER the ceremony. One before the ceremony might be confused with an invitation, especially since there are so many cool, nontraditional invitations nowadays.

You only send those types of cards to the people you are inviting. To the ones you don't invite you send them a card just letting them know you are getting married/gotten married. Also some send the announcement before hand. It all depends on the person I believe. Congrats on getting married.

you don't send a 'save the Date' if you are not inviting them to anything, why would they save the date? Are you just trying to get gifts?

Uh no, Save the Date cards are so that people can "save the date"... not "announce the date".....
