My partner can't get any more than 2 weeks off for our honeymoon. We wouldn't normally have a problem with this, but we've never done long haul, so taking the honeymoon as an excuse to have a dream holiday - 7000 miles away, and on a 12 day cruise. Flights are going to be really awkward, and then we're going to have to negotiate jet lag. My partner will have worked there for 7 years by the time of the honeymoon, so a loyal and trusted employee. I've already suggested going without pay for the extra week, and reminding him that a honeymoon is a once in a lifetime thing. Can you think of anything else that might help tip the decision?dlb_blair I know what you mean. for me, it's easy to get 3 weeks off, because I work in an office. My partner is a chef, and when I say he won't give more than 2 weeks, I mean literally 14 days. There are people that can cover, and the busy period of the summer is already over by mid Sept, so I don't really understand the problem. In the UK employers normally try to give more time off (eg 3 weeks) for those visiting the States or Australia).

one you get there you could just say that toe flight has been canceled a few days, not a full week, but just enough to fulfill your needs and to not make your boss really suspicious.

I am trying to understand the dilemna. If you have 10 days off, then with weekends on either end, you have 16days off. This leaves two days for traveling on either end of the cruise for if you have to take flights. However, if for some reason you have to have the extra days, he might want to talk to his boss about whether the company will allow him to use sick days as vacation days or not. Be prepared that many places won't let you be gone that long, though, because it is nearly impossible to catch back up with the work and finding volunteers to cover that much time is very hard.

We are taking a month long honeymoon and my fiance forfeited his 2 weeks this year, to get 4 weeks together next year. He was able to negotiate this with his boss. For me, I get 3 weeks and am taking one week off without pay. To us, it's worth it since it's once in a lifetime. It's not worth losing a job over though!

I'm with you . . . suggest taking the third week without pay, of course. If the boss still won't budge? Then I think it is time for partner to start job-hunting. Seek other employment.I really, really hate it when bosses think they can dictate wedding/honeymoon time. If your partner took off all the time, it would be different. But if he doesn't? Then I feel boss should be willing to work with him.

That really sucks, but I would stick to your guns and insist that he either take the extra days as unpaid leave, or tell his boss to look for a replacement entirely. It would be different if he were in an industry that was suffering from a lack of jobs where he might have a difficult time finding employment, but if he's been a faithful employee then the threat of him leaving may be enough to get his boss to relent and at least let him have the time unpaid.
