My father died a couple of years ago and my mother gave me his wedding rings. One has small diamonds in it and the band is gold but impregnated with mercury. The problem is he was a gold nut! He knew somehow that mercury is involved in extracting gold or thought so. Therefore, this ring is impregnated with mercury. Knowing mercury can cause nerve damage, I don't touch it directly. This may explain some of his actions in the last years of his life. Although, he didn't prefer to wear rings or jewelry, the amounts of mercury he had may have been absorbed in his skin. I know that heat may drive off the mercury in the ring but that the vapors are very dangerous.Has anyone heard of anything of this nature? Will a jeweller be able to remove the contaminate of mercury from this ring? As I said, he was a gold nut and as this ring as gold, it was an experiment in his quest for el Dorado.Sorry, but I thought I was posting in the Science section. It's possible that mercury and the car make, Mercury confused the Yahoo answers and posted it in this section as I had clearly entered the science part.It seems I've posted this question in the wrong section. Second time this has happened. I think yahoo is not what it used to be as I was sure I had posted it in sciences. Sorry for anyone who was looking for a car question.Ok, I see, having the word mercury, it shifted the spot to put it. To to the poster that sad it doesn't make much difference, the ring is discolored and no longer gold colored.

Cars & Transportation > Car Makes > Mercury is the category you asked in. Mercury the car, not the metal. That being said, the small amount of mercury bonding to a ring would be small enough to not pose a significant heath problem. Elemental mercury is usually quite harmless if touched or swallowed. It is so thick and slippery that it usually falls off your skin or out of your stomach without being absorbed.

If you cant get an answer on here post this question on the the TES teachers website. Go to www.tes.co.uk and look for the COMMUNITY section. Under the word community click on STAFFROOM. Post in the science section and a science teacher may be able to answer this question.

most all gold is extracted using mercury...however when the gold is smelted the mercury evaporates..so your fears are totally unfounded..mercury is completely safe as long as you don't ingest it or inhale the vapors....there is much more mercury in the fillings in your teeth than in that ring..i am a gold nut too
