Lens is not the only factor that should be considered in night/low light photography. There are many other factors that should be taken into consideration.
1- Shutter speed, the more dim is the scene the more you should decrease the shutter speed to allow more light to come into the camera.

2- Aperture (f), Aperture refers to the size of the opening in the lens that determines the amount of light falling onto the film or sensor. Unlike the shitterspeed, the more you decrease the f value the more you open the lens.

3- Film Sensitivity (ISO), Film Sensitivity exists in the conventional film cameras as well as digital cameras. Increasing the sensitivity -ISO value- amplifies the output of the sensor, but it also amplifies the undesired noise. So it's preferable to avoid shooting on high ISO values as much as possible.

One final tip, when shooting at low shutter speed it's highly recommended to use a tripod to avoid blurry shots.

I really like night shots that show light movement, so I can get slower (and cheaper) lenses and still get what I want.

It comes down to what you want to do with it really.
