We are still working out the details but my fiance and I are having a destination wedding in the fall of next year in the Carribean. Since people are going to be flying in, I thought it would be nice to make welcome gift baskets to give them when they arrive with favor-like things in them (beachy candles, flip flops, beach towelscameras, etc.). If I do this I want to get nice things as they are spending a lot of money to come. So, do I have to give favors at the wedding too? We are going to be casual on the beach and it feels very formal to me. What do you guys think?

No we didn't We got married in Jamaica and we did something similar to your idea. we meet them at the airport with baskets of flip flops and different things from the island and after the ceremony we just told everyone thanks. But i still get calls today stating how much they appreciated the baskets

Instead of gift baskets for your welcome "baskets" try beach pales. That will go with your theme as well. As for the wedding Id say no that is your thank you gift to them. you do not have to put favors on the table.

You aren't required to give favors, especially if you're providing them with nice welcome baskets beforehand. If you feel like it's necessary, you can go with simple favors: a bowl of chocolates at each table or a nice picture of the two of you in a frame. People come to your wedding to celebrate the two of you, not to get free stuff. You're already doing something thoughtful for your guests and it's your day, so do what makes you happy.

that is such a perfect idea- sounds generous too!! i would consider that more than a party favor-definately keep it classy by skipping the hum drum mints, picture frames...ect.your plan sound very original and much more thoughtful!!

In my opinion, the welcome basket would replace the wedding favors. It's going to be expensive to the welcome baskets whereby the wedding favors would maybe cost $10 each (if you get chocolate, candy, candles, etc.)I live in the South now and they don't even do wedding favors here. Can you believe it? When I was up North, we always got a little momento from the wedding.Anyway, my point is that you are doing enough with the basket.

I dont think you need to give both a welcome basket and favors, I think people will be very appreciative of the welcome basket and be happy with that. All of my guests are driving about five hours, so I'm going to make homemade cookies to wrap up and put in their hotel rooms with a little welcome note, and then at the wedding Im having individual packets of hot chocolate as favors (winter wedding) If I had more money available I would do more, but I think they will appreciate the thought behind the homemade cookies and note. Good luck to you!

I think its a great idea! It shows that even in the hectic crazy time you've gone through getting all of this organized you realize that your guests have spent their time and money to share a special time with you and also gives them "permission" to take a little time for themselves to enjoy a mini vacation at the same time. Personally I've never really understood the whole "favors" thing. To me it seems kind of backwards to expect that two people who are just starting a life together have nothing better to do then go around picking out trinkets for people who should really feel honored to be invited in the first place. I'm not talking about the gifts for the people who are actually in the wedding party like the best man or the maid of honor , these people usually help out with the planning and staging and should be recognized for their help. The people who just show up on your wedding day for the ceremony and free food should be there to increase your happiness on your wedding day not see what kind of neat trinket they can make off with.

Congrats on the wedding! I think that the baskets will be plenty. We didn't have favors at our wedding partly because we (I) didn't want to spend alot of money on something that people might not appreciate or like. So honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Though your idea sounds great, you need to think about how you will get all that stuff there. I am generally not a big fan of favors. We're also having a Caribbean wedding in St Thomas and we've decided to mail out travel books to everyone with a little note about how happy we are that they'll be coming so they can plan things they might like to do while they're there. This will be in lieu of favors. We're also hosting a welcome dinner the night before the wedding and a great lunch with a steel band after the wedding. We think that will be enough to make our guests happy.

I think if you give them a nice welcome basket filled with goodies, that should be enough. They are there to see you get married, not to get gifts.

You could use shells with their names on for the place cards, my cousin did this on stones for his wedding and everyone kept them so it doubles as a favor and is very cheap! just nedd a gold ink pen and some shells! x

Man.. you clearly have a lot of money to blow. j/kNo, I wouldn't worry about reception favors. You're giving them a really nice welcome basket with good stuff in it. Most wedding favors are not something guests really need or want. I mean, seriously, who really wants a 1.5"x2" photo frame engraved with the name of the couple and their wedding date? |

Hi and congratulations! What you are doing sounds great!! Yes, I would spend a little more on the beach welcome bags and forgo the favors all together. If you have read these boards very much, most of us agree that favors are a waste unless it's something edible! so, forgo the wedding favors and instead do your nice welcome bags! Some more ideas: tourist information, sunscreenGood luck...it sounds great!
