Favors are a "thank you" from you to your guests. I think some form of favor is necessary. They do not need to be expensive. And don't just pick a favor to have one; try to find something that reflects the two of you.

I suppose they are quite pointless, they are just decoration for the table and you don't have to use them! Although, you can make some from scratch, so they will be cheaper than buying! Some people buy little gems and wrap them in lace, I think, and my future mother in law has tons of them in her roof, from all the weddings she has been to, so they are of no use to anyone! My friend has some boxes made up and she put little chocolates in hers, from a Hero's box, for us all, which I think are better. I am not even sure what I am having yet! It is really up to you, depending on what you are having on the table, they may well be just something that clutters up the table. But the little chocolate idea is better than just some pointless beads!

Not necessary. especially if you can't afford it. What most people remember about a reception is the music, the food and the alchohol.

Well the favors are a way of saying to your guests thank you for coming. I plan to do my favors, I am doing CD's from us, a compilation of our favorite slow love songs. I have seen it used in previous weddings so I know people like them. My coordinator told me to do about 125 with 200 people coming because most will be left behind so once they are gone they are gone.

The caterers lost ours so we, too, ended up eating sugared almonds for ages afterwards once they were found and after we hade made such a good job of tying them in little bags.Personally, I would save the expense of lavish treatment of guests who probably won't appreciate it anyway. Put the money towards something the two of you need for the future.

I completely agree with you. However, they are becoming increasingly the norm - we went to a 30th birthday party recently and they had favours on the table, and we also went to a christening where there were favours too!I'm getting married next year and if I had my way we wouldn't bother. But I think the 'acceptable and polite' thing to do, IS to provide something - even if it's just a little chocolate in a box.But to me it's just frippery,...........!!

Im doing individual packets of hot chocolate. My guests are all traveling about 5 hours or so, so I figured It would be nice to go a little above and beyond in this situation, and I thought they would be a gift that would actually be appreciated. It's a winter wedding so it fits in well, and it adds some color to the tables.

Not necessary - nice, if you can afford them - but every favor I've gotten at a wedding has gotten tossed. I'm getting napkins printed with our names, to serve with the cake. That way, they are useful - and if someone WANTS a memento, they can have an extra napkin. If you go that route, theknot.com has 100 personalized napkins for ~$20.
