I love this idea, and so did the other people who were seated around me when I was at weddings with such a favor. The last wedding I went to that did the charity thing left little parchment notes at each plate with a little explanation that instead of a traditional favor a donation will be made to the American Cancer Society. You can find wording for these online. Good luck.

I don't think saving money on your charitable activities by working them into your wedding guests' experience is a good idea. People spend a lot of money on a wedding gift. They also sometimes buy new clothes, travel, and they always re-arrange their schedules and devote a day to celebrating a couple's wedding. If you want to give a certain amount to charity, why don't you have a smaller wedding, buy a used gown, go on a shorter honeymoon, have fewer bridesmaids and groomsmen. In other words, why don't you bear the burden of giving instead of off-loading it onto your guests?

My son is getting married next year and he and his fiancee are making a donation to St. Jude's Childrens' Hospital. They will have a keepsake book marker from St. Jude's for each guest.I haven't been to a wedding in a while and wasn't aware you needed to have a "gift" for each guest. I also didn't realize that restaurants charge $1-2 per slice to cut and plate your wedding cake! Yes, guests do incur some expenses in attending a wedding but weddings, even small ones, are amazingly expensive for the bride and groom and their families. You have to decide how to budget the money and I really like the idea of charities being the recipients of some of it.Question back: What are some of the favors you have gotten at a wedding and was it something you would use or was it tossed in some drawer?Julie Q

It's a nice idea, but I think people look for a momento of some sort.
