We are planning our wedding day, have it pretty well under control food etc but I am wondering what people do at a backyard wedding. We want the day 2 B really nice, decorating our yard and pool, putting up a marquee and serving finger foods, salads and kind of a buffet type thing. Punch and champagne and beer as well. Probably about 60 people, mainly family.I was not thinking of a sit down meal....just the ceremony then socializing, drinks and help yourself to the buffet. Cocktail hour type thing. We are starting about 2pm, and it will be winter.has anyone had a wedding like this? What did u do? Did u still have speeches and a waltz? I was planning on having music but no DJ as such.I would be interested to hear how other people have run their special day..I still want it to be nice, dress up and the ceremony will still be pretty formal. How have you enteretained people? I was thinking maybe a simple speech thanking people after cutting the cake. Ideas please? We live in Queensland Australia. Our winters are very mild....a little like a Californian winter day. Usually clear blue skies and gorgeous.I am planning tonnes of food.Horse d'erves, meat and cheese platters, hot stuffed cob loaves, spinach and cheese triangles, salads, prawns, sushi rolls, cocktail sausage rolls, crusty breads and dips and a hot pasta meal, probably chicken and pasta. So there should be plenty. And yes we were planning on playing music, making up an mp3 with all our favourite songs.

Winter weddings are good.... inside. I hope it wont be cold. Make sure you have DJ so people can dance and they will have fun. Dont worry. Food, music, and drinks = fun.

outside in the winter????? sounds cold... haha um.. it sounds like a really good idea.. my friend had a wedding kind of like that.. there was only like 100 people there... which sounds big.. but its not. it was all outside.. very relaxed.. lots of finger foods durring the day, they had a platform where they did the dancing and anouncments and things like that... it was really cute. i think every wedding should have there 'dance' it is very memorable and touching. please dont pass up your dance!!! even if you dont have a platform and your barefeet in the grass.. please have a dance!! haha

i have been to many backyard weddings and they are the same as any other wedding. you can still do your first dance and everything like that. i think your idea sounds great. if you don't want to do all the dancing and garter and all that stuff then don't. that day is all about you and your husband do whatever you want. good luck and congrats.

Everything sounds fine with the exception of the marquee. It's unnecesary and quite frankly, dated and ugly.If you do not have a DJ, have a laptop or a Ipod play the music. Dancing on a backyard could be hard, but if you still want that, go for it. You can rent a dance floor for outdoor weddings. Youc an have a first dance, speeches whatever you want, but if you don't want to do it, then don't.Good luck

My only comment is- YES, I have been to this type of wedding but wasn't fully warn. Let people know it's outside and it's only snacks- not a meal. I was standing in 90 degree heat with makeup melting off my face, high heels stuck in the grass, starving because the bride never told anyone it was outside and a full meal won't be served.

went to our first backyard wedding about 4 weeks ago and hated it.it was finger food and we all starved because there wasn't enough of it. they had all the other trimmings like marque, dance floor, DJ, bar etc. but when people are chasing the food dish around its a bad sign.

At 2 pm guests should not expect a full meal. I would mention you will be outside and to dress accordingly. People usually manage to entertain themselves whether you have a DJ or not. If you want to, you can set up a CD player. You can have your MOH and BM give a speech if you want to.Last summer I went to a friend's wedding that was held in her parents yard. There was about 100 guests and we mingled amongst ourselves while the couple made their way around to talk to everyone. Having a small affair gives you a better opportunity to actually have quality time with guests. Mainly this is about what you and your fiance want for your day.

We did a backyard wedding for my mom. We rented a couple of tents, tables and a simple dance floor. Everything came out beautiful and no different than had we rented a hall. After dinner, they did the usual garter/bouquet toss, speeches and cake cutting. Dancing continued for hours. Since it was winter we had coffee and hot chocolate available for everyone in the evening.
