My girlfriend and I are thinking about honeymoon spots, a friend of ours offered to let us stay at his place in Mazatlan, and we are trying to see with airfare and food approximately how much it is going to cost us. And if it makes more sense to just do the all inclusive

I spent a week in Maz about a month ago and ate out every meal. It seemed to me that restaurant food is about 25% less expensive than where I live (Oregon); so not the bargain I was expecting from previous travel in Mexico but still gratifying.

If his place in near downtown (old town) you can buy street food for next to nothing, small restaurants are cheap and you can do fancier ones now and then. I assume there's a kitchen and market food is great for cooking in.If it's a condo in the Golden Zone (north) it will be harder to find the cheaper placesDon't know how you can beat free rent

I actually live here and diners can vary. In the Hotel Area (Gold Zone) diner can run from $8 to $ 25 and more. Most places Have a manue outside so you can check BEFORE you go in. There are some even below that. At Plaza Machado in Old Town there are a couple dozen restaurants that run from $5 to about $18 with the average diner being abouy $8 and these are NOT hole in the wall places. They run from "Beach Burger" to the rather fancy "Pedro and Lola's". Mazatlan is THE cheapest place on the Mexican Riveria. Do NOT do All Inclusive.
