I got into a discussion with my female friends at my hens night (thats bachelorette party to you ladies in the US) the other night about weddings and the cost of everything. The topic turned to what you should spend a bit of money on and what you could save money on. The general concensus amongst my group of friends, (both married and single) was spend your money on the food (it's what guests remember) and photography ( You'll have those photos for a LOOONG time) and save money on favours ( a lot of the guests will leave them behind) What do you guys think?

I agree with your friends. The food and the photos are the most important things. The food because it is like a "thank you" for your friends for showing up. And the photos... well, that's obvious enough. : )The favors are generally not kept by anyone but the bride and groom and parents and maybe even the best friends of the two. They'll end up getting put aside somewhere.

I think you should spend on what matters the most to YOU and save on what doesn't. Have one venue you've always wanted for your reception? Dreamed of a one of a kind couture gown? Want your wedding overfowing with flowers? Spend on that. Don't care too much about the decor? Want a normal stacked vanilla cake with minimal decorations? Save on those. For me personally, I am spending on my gown, the food, photography, and entertainment/DJ. I am saving on the cake, flowers, accessories, church, etc.

I think do the food yourself, to save HALF the wedding costs. The food is the single most expensive part of a wedding. And unless you are a REALLY crappy cook, they will still talk about the food.

I agree with your friends. Most of my guests left the expensive candle favors behind. My mom was trying to dole them out on my siblings today at Thanksgiving... almost a year later!I would add one more thing to splurge on, and that's music. Your guests will remember the dancing, probably even more than the food.

The photos are definitely important. You shouldn't skimp on the food or dj either. The best thing to do is make a list of what you really want and what you don't. Skip anything that isn't important to you.

Miss R and I are on the same track. I spent the most money on the D.J., my second expense was the photographer then the food. I have no regrets on what I spent. The DJ was amazing and totally made the party. The photos still turned out great and nobody left our party hungry.

I agree with your friends but you should also add the dress and tux as an important expense (hair and makeup too). Your photos won't look good if you don't look good.

I agree, good food (your guests have probably bought you a gift, bought a new outfit and incurred travelling costs) if you can afford to feed them well then do it. Photos as well (unless you know a friend that is a photographer) Favours don't need to be elaborate, I bought boxes and put nice chocolates in them and tied the box with a ribbon like a Christmas present, it was cheap and people like food favours, I think nick-nacks like mini picture frames, bells, snow globes, little ornaments etc are a waste of funds.

I agree- food and drink are primary, then photography. I wish I had spent a little more on photography. One area that you can save is on the dress. I've known girls who have purchased $3,000 wedding dresses when the rest of their wedding budget is $10,000. To me, that's crazy. No one knows who the designer is unless you go around telling everyone, and even then, who cares? Find a dress that fits and flatters you, and don't feel like the only way you will look pretty is if you spend a fortune!

I agree with the food - plus having a full open bar. The couple should be hosting their guests to an amazing celebration! So to that I add great music!!!Photography - well, one doesn't have to go overboard on it, but of course you want special photos and video.Favours - I think they are a nice touch, but just don't go overboard. Some nice mints or candies tied in tulle with a ribbon can be enough!I think in N. Am. too many brides seem to be way overly concerned with centrepieces, and table/chair linens of all things!Good luck to you!
