I asked a question yesterday about the best software for photography and was told that Photoshop CS3, was the best one out there. After searching online I see that there are a few different ones such as Photoshop CS3 Complete, Upgrade, Extended, Lightroom, and Media Only. I'm curious what the difference between them are. I just want to make sure that I get the best thing for the money, since this seems to be a VERY expensive product. I don't want to get one version and find out I should also buy another version. Also my computer runs Windows Vista (which I absolutley HATE) and I want to be sure that this software would be compatible with it. Any tips and advice would be much appriciated.

You can get demo versions from http://www.adobe.com/ which also has information about the differences. Try them out and see which fits your needs best.

Photoshop CS3 is the base program. Lightroom, Extended, etc are upgrades for the advanced user. Yes, Photoshop will run on Vista, I use it almost every day. You can, as David says, download a trial version, load it and do some looking around. But if you are really interested in becoming a pro with this software you may want to consider enrolling in a Photoshop class at your local community college. Don't hate Vista, instead just tweak it until it works the way you want it to. I've been using it ever since it came out and it work extremly well. No crashes, no blue screens, no freezes, it just runs fast, solid and secure. Give the thing a chance, remember it took well over a year and the first service pack to get XP up and running right.
