Do stacked cakes need separators between each layer? Also, we are having a 4 layer heart shaped cake (stacked) what would work for the bottom layer to sit on? We don't want the base noticeable. Would a heart shaped separator plate work for the bottom layer?

i do not put separator plates in between each layer, only because even though it is a little easier to cut, it can make a mess.....if you stack your cake and buy wooden dowel rods to stick down the center of the cake it will hold the layers in place and then you have no need for the separator plates.....as for the base you can use a heart shape separator plate, and if you are using flowers on your cake you can put some around the bottom of the cake after you get it to where it will be for the reception to hide the plate since it will be lifted up a little....but using the plate will make it easier to handle
