| I am in a play which is based on Freaky Friday and explores sibling rivalry and gender differences. Instead of the mother and daughter swapping, the brother and sister swap in this case. It's a bit of a farce and I am a guy playing both me and my sister. During the play I have to make a number of quick scene changes switching costumes and gender. While the scenes are fixed and to some extent determine the costumes, there is still some flexibility in the exactness of the costumes too and so we are trying to figure out how best to design these and also modify the costumes for quick changes.The scene we are most struggling with is at the end which is set around the mom's wedding (like the movie) and so both brother and sister are in more formal attire. We haven't figured out how to hide a dress under a suit or vice versa for example. |

| The answer is "Velcro". Instead of hiding one costume under another, the costumer makes the openings of each costume with Velcro (instead of zippers or buttons). That way the costumes can be literally ripped off and changed in a manner of seconds. Also, you'll need a "dresser"; this is a stage hand who assists the actors with their costume changes, and makes sure all costume pieces are correctly worn.If you already have the costumes, and I assume you do...they can be altered to remove the zippers and buttons and have Velcro added. Often shortcuts are made in costuming; for example, a shirt and coat jacket will be sewn together and an opening left in the back with Velcro fasteners for easy and speedy dressing. | In addition to your first answer, think of underdressing, so that all you have to do is take one set of clothes off and the other set is underneath. It will depend on your costume which goes over and which goes under |

| get somebody to assist you by getting the costumes off hangars, unzipped, etc, so you can just slip them on, and then they can hang the costumes up when you are back onstage. |

| whatever you do DO NOT USE VELCRO it never lines up properly it creates gaps and it looks tacky! The mics pick it up and it sounds really embaressing backstage, you need zippers, your costumer should rig both outfits with nice big zippers!you want this type of zipper: http://www.zipperstop.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/10molded36.htmYou can buy it any fabric store.You will need to assign dresssers to each actor to assist with this quick change. |
