I recently went to a wedding of a friend from high school. We don't see each other often, and we don't talk on a regular basis. I'm also completely broke (I owe a lot in taxes, as I freelanced last year), and didn't really have money to spend on a gift. She was registered at Target, but all the gifts she'd registered for were either things like forks, or expensive appliances. I ended up getting her a $25 giftcard (she'd registered for giftcards). Now I'm reading through the questions here (and most people saying $50 is the least you should give) and starting to worry that it wasn't enough. I can't afford anything more expensive than what I gave, but should I be ashamed of that? Thanks so much for the reassurances, you guys! *whew* I was really wondering about that!

I wouldn't, I got married this July. We got lots of $25.00, some even $10.00. We weren't upset by it. I wouldn't worry about it. I think it depends on your state as well. I live in Wisconsin, maybe we do things cheaper here.

Don't be ashamed. If she looks down on you for it, then she's not worth having as a friend. I won't care if no one gets me any presents, so long as I get to marry my man! That's what a wedding is all about.

you're supposed to reimburse the bride and groom for the cost of the reception and meal, but I'm sure she'll understand your situation.

I don't think you should be ashamed at all!! Your friend invited you to her wedding because she respects YOU and wanted YOU to be there. What's important is not what you gave, or how much that thing costed, but the fact that you gave her something. Considering your financial situation, I think it was wise not to overspend just to impress her. You should be proud of yourself, and who you are. Don't be ashamed. I'm sure she's just glad you came. Good luck hon, and keep your head up high.

Doesn't matter. You gave what you could afford. If people have an issue with the cost of a gift, they're rude and ill-mannered

You gave what you thought you could afford. Don't spend time worrying now. I'm sure your friend appreciated the gift card.

You should not be ashamed. You gave what you could afford. Hopefully, you were invited to the wedding to share their day, not because of the gift you may or may not give. Anyone that gets upset because of the cost of a gift didn't deserve to have you at their wedding, much less as a friend. Good for you for realizing your financial limits!

You gave what you could and you should not feel guilty or ashamed that you weren't able to give more. $50 is simply a guideline. It's not the "rule", and it's most certainly not the "least amount" one should give. I'm sure your friend really appreciates your gift!

I think whatever you could give is enough.
