If you do it as a full time profession, rather than a hobby, definitely get a website, you can post your portfolio there, and will make you look more professional. And it used along with some business cards, it will convince your potential clients even more that you know what you're doing.

Just make sure that the site design looks decent, you don't have to get a top-notch design, just something that doesn't look like a amatuer did it in a few minutes.

A quality website is a must if you hope to have people take your service seriously. I agree that you do not need a top end website with many features but you will need a middle end website with few features that work REALLY well. Those features should include contact information, photo display and company information. The hosting of the website does not need to be elaborate as all of the files that would take up any bandwith at all can be supplemented using free services (there are many free image host out there just google it). Browse through some webmaster forums such as Digital Point and you should get a good idea of what is included in a good website as well as a plethora of services availible to you.

There are many website templates you can buy today as well. This can be populated with content specifically to your application.

Many wedding photographers use these templates because it's a lot cheaper than hiring a pro to design a custom website for them. You can get templates in the range of $30 to $150 from various on-line retailers.

The thing about having a website though is that it has to be good right on the launch. People won't see a site and think that it's new, you're competing against people who have already gotten themselves established.

nice website. that's how every website of this type should look. it's not ok to use black as background on a wedding-related website and definetely you'll need to have a great design for it.

I just had my site done by www.4dphotographywebsites.com and I am waiting for the launch January 15th, 2008. They have done an amazing job with me, communication, design, customization. They also offer a more "plug & play" version for about $500. My designer told me that he has done gallery sites for couples for their wedding as well, so I know it is not limited to photographers only- Their work is really worth checking out. I never had to leave home to work with them either- everything was done over the phone and email.
They also paid my friend a 10% referral fee when I got my site, so I reference them a lot when I get into conversations with people who are looking for a good designer. It is a standard procedure- really cool people.
