I currently considering getting a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L. Also, I don't carry an extra flash ( just the one on the camera that pops up). Nor do I use a tripod. After reading reviews, Canon EF 70-200mm f/ 2.8 seems better, but it's out of my budget. I want to use it for a family wedding in a church and reception. What are your thoughts on using the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L in low light situations and indoors without extra flash or tripod?oh btw the way, I'm not the main photogrpaher for the weddding. I'm just a relative who takes pictures fo fun.

If you use the slower lens make sure that you use a high ISO speed

If for anything but a wedding, I would say up your ISO and try out your handheld skills shooting some field sports.Weddings? Yikes!Basic cost to show up is $2000, pictures are add-ons.Shoot a few of those and you will be able to afford a lot of lenses and flash units. You are really handycapping yourself by not using a flash (Canon only so you don't fry the electronics on the camera). The main problem is they are a one shot deal. It can't be reshot, so you had better have your technique nailed down.

The lens may be okay if your camera has low noise at the high ISO settings (1600). I'm assuming you're using a digital camera. The f/2.8 lens is nice, but it's VERY HEAVY. There's a lot of glass in there!Look at anti-vibration lenses. That might be a better choice for low light indoor use.

This lens is really not going to be fast enough, especially without using a flash or tripod...and especially for using in an inside church and reception location. If it had IS, then maybe it would be a different matter. Unfortunately, adding IS is going to cost big bucks.Upping the ISO will help, but make sure it's not too high because you then run the risk of too much digital noise in your photos. If you're strapped for cash, maybe you should look at a fast prime lens instead.Check out the links below for recommendations and reviews.good luck...
