I am having a small outdoor wedding in a pavilion with about 50-75 people. I have been looking in to DJs but they are so expensive. The pavilion has a place to have music piped around the building. Should we just create our own playlist or what?I mean, is that tacky? It would save about 500-700 dollars. How would we arrange the father daughter dance, etc?

it's not tacky to diy your music. you can make a playlist on your ipod and just designate someone to announce the special dances, or rent a microphone from a party store or music store to announce thingsjust make sure all the songs are good quality and don't have abrubt endings or other tech dificulites.also check on craigslist for djs. under services. sometimes they list there and are super cheap.

The main thing a DJ does is be an MC for the night. They introduce the bridal party and the dances and so on. I don't think the playlist is tacky but it probably would be good to designate someone to do the introductions for the bridal party and the dances. Otherwise I think its fine. :0)

hm...you could go on Craigslist.com , and search in the city/state that your located in for cheap affordable Djs... You can post your own adds for free. Post an add for someone who knows what they are doing but who are not "professionals". That way you are having someone do it but still are getting a good price. Though if that is something that you would do, make sure to check for references, obviously you wouldnt want some punk kid.

Since it is really hard to get all of the timing down, I would say that you should hire a DJ...unless someone can run the Ipod/computer from the outside. You will want someone who can pause the music, restart a song, play a different song if need be. If you can do that then I would get one of your friends to be your Master of Ceremonies and let them handle it. I am sure they can annoucnce the father daughter dance, etc. It's not all that complicated, but you want to make sure that everything is timed right...

If you have an ipod I would go ahead and just set it up with a playlist, but have a friend you completely trust be your mc for the night. He/she can announce the happy couple, your first dance, etc. Just create a playlist and a corresponding song itinerary that he can follow for the night. So, he knows that at 5:00 your first dance song starts playing, he hits pause after the previous song, announces the bride and groom will have their first dance and then hits play. It will go very smoothly if you pick someone responsible. good luck!

Make your own music. For the father daughter dance you can have a special cd with the song you would like. Have a friend start it then go back to they original music. Thats what my sister did

If it's not that important to you to have a DJ, you can most certainly do your own music, especially considering the fact that your wedding sounds relatively informal. You can download songs to an ipod & then hook it up to the sound system. About 80 songs should be enough for a 4 hour reception. As for the bride & groom's first dance and the father-daughter dance, just have those set up on the ipod at the beginning of the playlist. Or, if you wanted to do the special dances at a later time in the reception, just have someone in charge of monitoring the ipod & they can play the songs whenever you are ready. This would be easy & save you some money!
