First off don't insult the poor guy by giving him some menial job that makes him miss having fun at the reception like attending the guestbook or cutting the cake. If he doesn't have a phobia about public speaking and your ceremony will still stay under that 1 1/2 hour timefram then you could ask him to do a reading and perhaps a short blurb on how that reading relates to love and marriageI would suggest you make him "Master of Ceremonies". He can wear a special outfit like the bridal party....perhaps match the ushers but with a bridal party tie. During the ceremony he sits in the crowd but with a reserved seat like family. He's mentioned in the programs. At the reception his job is to make all the major announcements like when it's time to cut the cake, father/daughter dance...etc.
