they should be received by guests 8 weeks before the event. your friend is going to be sorely disappointed when tons of people tell her they have other plans because she didn't formally invite them until May.

She can send out "save the dates" now and then send out the invitations the first week of May. Six weeks is the average for sending out invites. You know when the wedding is so just mark it down on your own calendar. No biggie!

6 to 8 weeks before the wedding is ediquite, however it is by pure choice to send them out earlier

4 to 6 weeks - sometimes now people send out "STD's" (save the dates) early
