New to photography, was given a pentax k100d as a present. I am going to a car show on the weekend and thought might be sweet to take a few shots. But the problem is.......ah, which setting? Do i use auto pic mode? portrait mode? landscape mode? theres a macro but thats for close ups is it not? night scene portrait? Bulb exposure...dont even know what that is? Aprture priority auto exposure? shutter priority auto exposure? program automatic exposure? or night scene? Sheesh! and also better to take shots in raw or jpeg?? Any help would be so great! Especially help from those with this particular camera model!! Last thing,With the packaging of the camera, enclosed was a plastic ring roughly 2cm in width that screws on the the end of the lense, should i keep this on for indoors use or will i look like i dont know what im doing?! once again thanks!

Since you're new to photography, I would recommend that you use the auto pic mode and shoot jpegs.I don't have that particular model, but at this point, auto is most likely to give you the best results. Later on when you get more familiar with the camera you'll probably want to try aperture priority or even other modes, but for now just stick with auto.

In Auto Pic mode your camera will asses what it 'sees' and select a mode from the list you gave automatically. This is a best guess by the camera, but at this stage in your knowledge will at least give some usable results.Jpeg or Raw? Personally I always shoot in Raw (well nearly always) as this leaves all your options open, but you will have to use the Photo Laboratory software from the disc to convert to Tiff (my recommendation, as it's lossless ) or jpeg, but in the software you can alter exposure, colour balance and a whole raft of controls before you commit the image. With Raw the original remains untouched no matter what you do in software, so in the months ahead when you have gained some knowledge you can go back and try again. When you shoot in Jpeg the camera does this processing for you, but, and it's a big but, it's a best guess by the camera, any data that is not used in the conversion is 'dumped' by the camera (over half the data will be 'dumped'), but it will yield a result that can be used without further processing. You can also set your camera to record both Jpeg and Raw simultaneously, but that takes extra room on your card.I would advise you to just take photos 100's of 'em, doesn't matter what they are, and just practice using your new camera and software. This way you get to know how your camera is going to react to various situations, low light, bright, contrasty light etc.. so when you go on a 'serious' shoot you have a pretty good idea what works best for you. One of the beauties of digital is it doesn't cost anything to take pictures, whether they ever see the light of day in a print is unimportant at this stage.I think the 'plastic ring' is a lens hood I always use mine.Chris

There should be an icon of what looks like a person running, that is the sports mode, it will constantly refocus while your finger is partially depressing the shutter and is excellent for moving objects. For stillyou could set it on auto until you understand the camera better. Manuals are great reading!

Uness you have a good grasp of what all the settings do, put it on Auto and leave it there. Uninformed messing around will get you bad pictures.Shoot in highest quality .jpg. Raw requires too much fiddling on the computer.I don't know what the ring is, but it's undoubtedly covered in the User Manual, which I presume you have read.HTHV2K1
