The gift isn't a cover charge to make up for all the food you're providing. You send a Thank You card, because it is polite to thank someone when you are given a gift.

you do it out of respect. They were nice enough to get you a gift, so it is polite to take a couple minutes out of your day to formally thank them.

Because it is good manners to be appreciative of a gift. Especially a wedding gift. That's really mandatory good etiquette. Other instances would be a wedding shower. With a birthday party I think a "thank you very much" would be enough. But when I receive birthday gifts in the mail, I always send a thank-you card.

Well first of all it lets the person know you actually got the gift - many gifts are sent mail order through the registry processI have sent gifts before and weeks later - I'm like wondering - did they get it? - is it lost in the mail? Then I have to start finding it and its unbelievably rude to track the package and find out that they recieved it and never bothered to let me know Its rude, selfish, lazy - do I need to go on?The reception is not a rewards process - in other words, it is a celebration and all of my family friends are invited - that celebration is in no way linked to the giftsThe gifts are a way for people to help a couple start out on their life together - in more primitive societies, the gift might be land or livestock - in ours, its towels, plates, kitchen items, etc. You need to thank those people who are setting you out on your way together
