| I'm looking at getting a 12MP camera. I'm a huge fan to Nikon, but I own two Olympus DSLRs at the moment. I've been a loyal Olympus Owner since 2001 when my Dad bought me my first Olympus. Now I'm looking at getting a different brand since I've heard good reviews on both Canon and Nikon...but I can't decide which to go with. I run my own freelance Photography Business so I definitely want a camera that is good with Portraits and Wedding Photography...while also being able to get my favorite shots of Nature. |

| There's no right answer here, as both are fantastic cameras. However, the D300 is a far more durable camera, with a stronger body. The 5D is essentially a good sensor (35mm sized!) in a mediocre body. However, in terms of image quality, they are about equal. The D300 will be better for telephoto shots; the 5D for wider shots. Much will depend upon what you want to do and your ultimate choice of lenses.I don't think you'll go wrong with either camera, so I suggest handling both and seeing which one is a better personal fit for you. |

Canon requires you use a custom function and press a button to flip up the mirror and interrupt Live View to do a spot AF setting, while the Nikon D300's AF system works in Live view.The Canon system has to take the camera out of Live View for a moment to autofocus.I'll opine that the D300's AF mirror remains in place while the viewing mirror gets out of the way. If this is the case, that means that the AF mirror still needs to flip out of the way when you shoot in Live View with the D300.But wait - it gets better! | D300 better, is new and offered latest tech, also they different brand. I suggest get 18-200mm vr for d400 then you pretty much complete for lens.. Is something canon don't have for all around lens included is. |

| The colors on the D300 are insane!!! You'll love it! The only other camera that I would recommend for portraits and wedding photography is the Fujifilm S5Pro. The Fuji cameras use Nikon's F-Mount so any Nikon lens will work on it. Fuji's cameras have consistently had the best colors for people pictures, but they're slower than Christmas in operation. Frame rates are slow and the menus are clunky, but the image quality is amazing!Both Canon and Nikon make fantastic cameras. I personally have 2x Nikon D200's and a Nikon D2Hs and love the quality they give me and the quick operation. One thing I loved when I made my decision to go Nikon over Canon was how all of the critical settings that I used and adjusted constantly were all right at my finger tips and on the Canon's they were buried in menus.I'd say hurry and get your order in for a D300... from what I hear they're readily available most places but might not be for long once people realize how awesome a camera it is! | You really cant go wrong with Canon or Nikon cameras which have the same specs. But a Canon 5D cannot be compared to a D300.As someone rightly pointed out its more equivalent to a Canon 40D (10Mp vs 12Mp, don't read too much into MP). The 5D has a full frame sensor (which means you don't have to worry about field of view crops...but you worry about Vignetting) and the only Nikon that does full frame is the recently released D3 and it has pretty good specs.Since you have specified Portraits and weddings you will be good with either brands (you own experience with photography and lighting and choice of accessories like lenses will affect your final outcome). But nature is a different thing. If you are doing short exposures...both brands are equally good. If you are going to do long exposures (5,10,20min BULB etc) then Canon will beat the pants off any existing Nikon. The noise generated by Nikon sensors is unbelievable while they are non-existent in even entry level Canons. I am still waiting to hear if D300 is any better. Even if you run the Long Exposure NR it really does not help. And its ridiculous to take a 10min exposure and wait another 10min for NR to work. Off course if you don't plan to do such long exposures then you are ok. If you do, and you invest in Nikon based on the advice you have received over here, then you will have to invest in a cheapo Canon body (like many Nikon photogs I know do) just for Long exposures. Finally, I understand that there is an overwhelming # of Nikon users who post on Yahoo Answers but that really does not justify calling a 5D as "mediocre construction". Its got the same Magnesium alloy body as the rest of the Canon 40D/1Ds/1D line up. |

| I own a Canon 5D and purchased the D300 when it first came out. I have to advise you to go for the the D300 for a couple of simple innovations / reasons. 1. The D300 has amazing colors. If you go into the menus and set the color to vivd and set the saturation to +++, you will get incredibly vivd color. The difference between the colors on the D300 & 5D is amazing. It really is the first dig SLR camera I have owned that actually gives better quality photos.2. The Active D-Lighting takes care of shadows and highligh problems that alot of DSLR's face. The D-Lighting function on previous Nikons doesn't work but the Active D on the D300 actually works!3. Being able to shoot a 6 frames per seconds versus the 5D's 3 frames is a big advantage (to me anyways).4. Yes the 5D has a full frame sensor, but the quality of the D300 shots well makes up for this. You really won't notice the difference.If you don't mind spending the extra money you may want to consider the new Nikon D3 ($5000 body only) which is a full frame sensor (like the Canon 5D) but features all the technological innovations the D300 has (Active D Lighting, plus extra color saturation). If you make your living from photography either the D300 or the D3 would be excellent choices.Aside of many other features the D300 has (superior autofocusing over the 5D), I could go on and on.If you want to see actual photo's of a good photographer comparing both the D300 and the 5D, check out http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300.htmI think once you read Ken's article / review, your mind will be made up =)PS.
