I was real sick w/a virus, emailed in sick last wed. morning from a bad virus. [never had I missed a day due to being sick this past yr.]she got mad, leaving a nasty "toned" message to call her.when I woke up from being ill called her. all she asked is if I'd be in tomorrow. I said most likely yes.So I was.next wed. the SAME thing. same virus/relapse, felt even WORSE. So truthfully, honestly went to the ER.Left her an email at 5am saying I'd be at the hospital was really ill.She really actually didn't care.she was just mad, took me OFF the schedule, didn't call or email me it turned out later. So Later that day called her.she wouldn't answer whether or not I could work or not the following week, just saying to me "Monday, we have something very important to talk about". and said goodbye, hung up.WELL, This is a sales rep/merchandising position. She emails everybody mornings when she gets up. and checks her emails at like at 6-7am.she never said, "You have to call"

I think it's more likely that you were sick two wednesdays in a row without much of a real explanation. A real virus usually takes more than a day to get over, and you may not have looked very ill or run down the day after. If your boss thinks you were simply emailing in sick because you had something better to do, of course she'd be pissed off.Try taking in a medical certificate, signed by the doctor you saw. If you dont have (or cannot get) a medical certificate, then you really will look like you just took the day off both weeks because you felt like it.

First off, I am sorry you have such a horrible job. It sounds like your boss is trying to over compensate her duties and take out agression and dominance on you. The same phenomenon has been witnessed in studies on mock prisoner/ guard situations. Many cops, mid-level management, and authority type people exhibit this (non-slave owning slave drivers were/are often described as being the same way!) You should look for a new job!To answer your question directly. It does not appear as if you are being fired hence her saying "Monday we have something very important to talk about" It sounds like she may even be giving you time to rest where afterward she will probably still scold you ....I wouldn't worry anyway... I know because you are also sick you also are at your most vulnerable and accordingly feel that wayBut when you feel 100% and fully recuperated you will have the correct attitude about this situation. You shouldn't fear losing your job, she should fear losing her employee! You have basic rights as a worker, employee, and as a person, among them are missing work from being unexpectedly ill and visiting the emergency room.Stand up for yourself, you have to be above those types of people that like to take advantage of their authority like this and learn to manipulate them back.If she scolds you and it turns out to be over the top by basic professional standards then I would go to her boss and talk about her unprofessionalism. If she is the owner/ supreme bosslady then I would stand up for myself and tell her how you don't appreciate her actions ...and if it came down to it... get fired/ and/or walk up out there and find a new job

It's standard operating procedure to CALL IN (i.e. using a telephone) when you are sick. It is a courtesy due your employer. You were rude to send an email, you should have called you Boss and told her that you were sick. CJ

I would say the reason that she got so upset with you was because of the fact that you did email her rather than to use the phone to call in sick. She is probably looking at it like you was too sick to come in to work but yet you weren't too sick to be on the computer and send an email. I know in all the handbooks that I have ever seen, it always says to "call" in if you can't come to work. So I would advise you, that the next time that you can't go to work cause you are too sick to go to work, "call" in to work instead of sending an email.Another factor on this is the fact that it happened on the same day of the week on 2 different weeks. If you have it, and you should, a document from the hospital that states that you were there at the hospital, when and what for. Give that document to her and that should be enough to clear you.

When you are too sick to go to work, it is much better to phone your boss, not e-mail her. On that particular day, she might not have checked her e-mail for a long time and was fully expecting you to be there. Please, don't ever do that again. I have known several very e-mail oriented bosses and I don't remember any of them receiving sick notices from employees via e-mail.

Anuaki7 is correct as well as Sapphire. The call in method is usually the appropriate and required rule in any job I've held. Read your employee handbook and see what it says. You will be better prepared when you meet with her on Monday. Have your certificates from any physician you have seen. Turn these in and make a copy for your records. You will probably be given a verbal warning unless you have received a verbal before. If that is the case, it will be a written warning which will be active in your employee file no less than 6 months. Good luck. It's tough sometimes to work for overbearing middle management control freaks but there is also a lesson you will learn in this situation. You are in control of your options for seeking another job.

It does look a little suspicious; you can get up, log onto your PC, wait for it to come up, type an e-mail, then get back in bed, and CAN'T just reach beside the bed and CALL? If you are really sick, it seems it would be much less difficult to use the phone, so it made it seem that you weren't really that sick at all. If you use your PC a lot at work, it seems you can do that since you were able to use it at home. See?

What is the company policy about taking a sick day. I'd find that in WRITING. My wife has to email for a day off. She calls in if she can't make it and follows up the call with an email. My company, I have to call in by 30 minutes before report time.Every company has or should have a sick day policy. Check yours out and show it to your supervisor.Make sure you get a note from your doctor about your illness.Good luck, and I hope you're feeling better.

You should have called in unless company policy dictates otherwise. This is an unpopular answer but you were hired to do a job and if you cannot perform it hurts the rest of your team. A note from your MD should suffice, as it is illegal to fire a worker who is ill and you may have cause for wrongful termination. As you probably know, "Sales" is a cutthroat industry.

Is the policy at work to email when you're not going to be there? If it is, then I'm not sure why your boss would be so mad. However, it would have been better to call her first ...cause what if she didn't check her email right away? Plus, definitely take a doctors note from the hospital just as proof.
