It should be well stated in your invite, as eloquently as possible. Stating dress appropriately seems unfit for the occasion. It is rather rude and seems like someone in his tux just spat on the floor. An unrefined feel. Just state " Smart-Casual"or "Formal".

All you need do is print the dress code for your wedding on the invitations. For example, my ceremony is at 1:00 in the afternoon, but our Carnivale theme requires a slightly Renaissance feel to the clothing to compliment domino masks. So we're asking for "daylight formal". I expect tea-length to full-length gowns for the women, and light-colored suits for the men.

You don't use the words "dress appropriately" you specify the level of formality: "Formal", "Semi-Formal", "Black Tie", "Black Tie Optional", etc.And IMO - you pay a bouncer-type guy to stand at the door of the reception and not allow admittance to anyone dressed inappropriately (sorry, you really can't do that at the church). There are many venues that have dress codes - - I think it is perfectly appropriate to state "XYZ Country Club requires Semi-Formal dress".

Maybe not "dress appropriately" because some people might have different opinions on what's appropriate. You can put "evening attire" or "black tie" or "semi-formal" or something to that effect. For my wedding, I put that information on my wedding website. I put the link to my wedding website on a little slip of paper inside the reception card included in the invitation. People went to the website for directions, hotel info, attire, and more!

OK, so playing devil's advocate. You can designate a dress attire on the invitation, but what are you going to do when Uncle Bob still comes in his "best" jeans and cowboy boots? Kick him out? Some people are not going to change whether you emphasize it or not.

AMEN to that.I don't understand why people don't realize that this is a wedding, not a backyard barbecue at Aunt Millie's house. AND they're taking pictures. Don't you want to look good?!Anyway, I believe you can put what kind of attire...formal, semi-formal, or casual. When you are putting together info on when and where, you can add in a line that says "black tie" or something like that so that people know. And to the person above, I agree...you can't kick them out. But I'm pretty sure they'll feel bad enough if everyone is wearing suit and tie while they are in a pair of Levis.

I understand what you're saying, but it's kinda rude to put "dress appropriately" on the invitations. The rules of etiquette say you shouldn't put anything about a dress code at all and that the formality of your invitations should dictate what you want your guests to wear, but people these days don't get that, so I'd say it's okay to put "black tie optional" or "evening wear optional" at the bottom of the invite. However, many people (not just those that need to be told do dress for the occasion) may not understand what you mean by "black tie" or "evening wear." Again, it all depends what your guests think is appropriate to begin with. Your best bet is to have the dress code spread by word of mouth in addition to writing it on the invitation. Believe me, the guests that are unsure of what you mean will ask, or they'll make their own assumptions.

I'm with everyone else, the wording you've got there is probably not the best, but if you write "Semi-Formal Dress" or "Formal Dress" or "Black Tie" or "White Tie" depending on how formal you want the guests to dress. Also, if the couple has a website, there is usually a place on the site that they can enter information about the dress code, where they can be more specific. In my case, for example, My invitation said Semi-Formal, and on the website I explained that it was an occasion to dress up, but long gowns weren't necessary for the ladies, and while the guys might want ties, they didn't need tuxes.

This one bothers me too, but it’s not something you can control. Short of buying an outfit for each person and putting a gun to their head so they’ll wear it, there’s no way you can control this. It’s one of those things that you really just have to let go. Fact is, the only people who will pay attention to a “black tie” or “formal attire” suggestion on an invite are the people who know to dress decently anyway; people who are too dense to know better aren’t going to have a clue what you mean. How someone dresses doesn’t really affect how married you’ll be when all is said and done. And you’ll make yourself crazy if you worry about this.

I would say formal attire or if you have having a black tie then I would mention that on it. The thing with black tie, is the people have to spend a lot of money on the outfits so they give you less money.

The rules of ettiquette state that the only appropriate mention of attire is black or white tie. And you can say they are required or optional. I completely get why you want to do this. It is my pet peeve when people dress poorly at weddings, and it happens all the time. On my invite I put "Black Tie Optional." Some people wore tuxes, and the others dressed really well, not knowing if they would be the only ones not in a tux. It completely worked.

Yes it is. Unless it is super formal, super casual or a costume wedding, you never dictate on the invitation what the dress code is. If you must give out that information, it is done via word of mouth only.
