Or something to that effect. I'm tired of going to weddings, especially in churches, where people are in jeans, boots, mini-skirts ,etc. This is supposed to be the most important day in this couple's life, and they went all out on their gowns/tuxes, so is it too much to ask for a little respect when it comes to dress?

At the bottom of the invite, you can type "Black Tie Only", "Black Tie Optional", "Garden Dress", "Sunday Dress", etc.....Don't type "dress appropriately".

Usuallt depending on the wedding style you are having you add in the invitation the dress code... Not "dress appropriately", yes that would be not right... but you can write "formal wear" or "casual wear" or "cockteil wear"... depending on how formal is your wedding...

I put something to that effect on my invitation. I didn't write "dress appropriately" because that sounds rude, but you can rephrase it and be fine. Maybe "formal attire preferred" or something like that.

That depends on the caliber of your guests. If they just dont get it, they dont get it. And you are not going to change them Im afraid.Your invitation should set the tone for the formality of the wedding. I dont think you should write "Dress appropriately" its like you are talking down to them, and I dont think it would be very effective. Whats appropriate in Uncle Billys eyes may not be appropriate in your eyes.

By putting "dress appropriately," you'd be insulting all of your guests (including the ones who would've dressed appropriately anyways) by implying that they are incapable of dressing themselves without help from you.

I don't think it is inappropriate, but on the other hand if you know certain people do not dress accourdly, one - they may not have to money to buy a new outfit and two- some people just do not have any sense. I don't think they are intentally trying to ruin an event. I do know who you feel, one of my husband nephews wore shorts with a tshirt to our wedding. You put so much money and effort and to see his lack of "respect" for our day was hurtful to us.

If this is an evening wedding, "Formal Attire"... would mean tux. So, go with "Black Tie Optional". That means slacks and white shirt with or without jacketsIf this is an afternoon wedding, " Sunday Dress". would be appropriate.

In this day and age I would suggest that you be MORE specific.

No way. If it's your wedding, then you (and the missus, always check with the missus!) have the say. Here's a really great "cheat sheet" from MSN concerning guest attire, from the creme de la creme (White Tie) to the everyday guest clothing...http://lifestyle.msn.com/relationships/couplesandmarriage/articletkt.aspx?cp-documentid=6742915&GT1=32001

eh, i personally would think it was a little weird for someone to tell me how to dress to go to a wedding... i think most adults can figure it out.... however, i do know what you mean about people that will show up in jeans and such... however, i don't think they're going to change even if you put something on the invitation... maybe you can just signal those people out to have passed to them by word of mouth they must dress nice? and if they don't, then i guess, they don't...

you're going to have to be more specific than that. as far as your family and friends are concerned, they're dressed appropriately every time they leave the house. problem is, they're definiteion of appropriate and yours are two different things. you could put black tie or jacket required and that would get the point across to the women as well what is expected of them.

Yes, it's too much to ask. You can't put dress appropriately on the invitation. It's rude and crass. It also implies your guests don't have the intelligence to dress in an appropriate manner. Depending on how the style of the invitation is depends on how guests usually dress. Plus, keep in mind some people may not own a suit and tie or fancy dress and they may be dressing in the nicest clothes they have.

I would put something like "Black Tie Affair" or "Formal Dress"But, even though you put that on the invitation do not expect everyone to comply. Some people just don't get it. For instance, my husbands brother showed up to the wedding in jeans...the country club almost didn't let him in.
